I'm sure a lot of you already have your travel plans made for 2019, and traveling means reading a good book to me. Please come and visit our first Book Sale for 2019, on March 9 from 9 am to 1 pm. We'll have lots of great books for sale – hard covers, soft covers, audio books – and deals, too! March has St. Patrick's Day which makes me think of Ireland, and of Irish writers, or storytellers in general. Something about the rain, the fog, and the peat fires brings out that desire to gather a group around in comfy chairs and tell a story. We know the Irish have a lot of thoughtful sayings as well. St. Patrick was born about AD 384 in Britain as Maewyn Succat. At 16 (AD 400) he was kidnapped from his home on the west coast and carried off to Ireland to become a slave who worked as a shepherd. "In Ireland the inevitable never happens and the unexpected constantly occurs." Working amongst the Irish he became fluent in their language. He escaped after six years, returned home, but on further travels, had a second imprisonment in Tours, France, where he learned of the monastic lifestyle. Maewyn had a dream in which he was called to preach the Gospel. He spent the next 15 years in a monastery, preparing for missionary work. "May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door." He became Priest Patricius (Irish: Padraig), and eventually Patrick with the mission to convert the Irish who were Celtic polytheists at the time. There were some Christians in Ireland then, but Patrick spread Christianity and brought an organized church into being. He recorded that he was successful in converting some noble Irish women, becoming nuns, and Christianity there was a combination of local churches with affiliated convents. "In Ireland the inevitable never happens and the unexpected constantly occurs." Legend says we wear the shamrock on St Patrick's Day because Patrick used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity. Patrick did not drive the snakes out of Ireland; this was a metaphor for opposing Druidism which used snakes in their symbolism. "May your glass be always full. May the roof over your head be always strong. And may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead." Patrick is considered to have died on March 17, this day is what we now take for "St. Patrick's Day." "Yes I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees dawn before the rest of the world." ~ Oscar Wilde. Happy reading!
