| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2019 | 57 All residents are invited to participate in the monthly clinics offered on the first Saturday of each month. Each person can choose from a variety of small groups for improving serves, volleys, and other ground strokes. Our next mixer is Sat., March 2 at 8:30 am. Singles, doubles, or hitting against a backboard, tennis is a great activity that can keep you fit. It keeps your cardiovascular and muscular system in top shape even as you age. Plus, you can't beat a strategic mental game that lets you enjoy the fresh air of the outdoors (Health Fitness Revolution). Registering for Tennis Club membership is easy! Forms are available at the South Clubhouse, just inside the door by the tennis courts. Slip the registration form (name, email address, and telephone number) with your check for $10 into the box. Checks can be made out to the Sun Lakes Tennis Club. It's a great way to make connections with other tennis players and nurture friendships. Many thanks to all of those members and new members who visited the Sun Lakes Tennis Club display at the Activities Day on January 19th. Congratulations to Steve VanLoon for winning the case of tennis balls! Steve's performance on stage to Macho Macho Man was a terrific advertisement for the Tennis Club! Tennis Club members, those who are Irish and those who wish they were, celebrate Erin Go Bragh (Ireland forever!) on March 20 with a mixer and dinner. The tennis mixer is from 5 to 6 pm. A dinner in the South Clubhouse follows at 6:30 pm. Members can sign up for this event at the South Clubhouse. The cost for the dinner is $5. Checks for the dinner should be made out to the Sun Lakes Tennis Club and left in the Tennis Club Box. Tennis can be played as a sport or as a recreational activity. Either way, playing tennis is a good sport to maintain your health, fitness, strength and agility. It has been calculated that an hour-long game of singles tennis burns around 600 calories for men and 420 calories for women (Better Health Channel). In addition to the fitness and physical health benefits, tennis also provides numerous social and mental health benefits as well. Let's get out there and play tennis! Tennis Table Tennis/Ping Pong We play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4 to 6 pm, and Sat., 10 am to 12 noon in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (normally). See the Events Board across from the Main Clubhouse Reception Desk for more information. Carl was born in Whittier, California, but spent much of his youth in Long Beach. After high school, he attended college for a couple of years and then joined the Air Force as a jet mechanic. Living in many different cities throughout his life, he and his wife Sandi decided it was time to move again, this time possibly to their retirement home. Sandi did extensive research and found this beautiful place called Sun Lakes. At that time Carl wasn't convinced that moving to Sun Lakes was the best decision, but eventually he and Sandi made the decision and they bought their home in 2000. After being here for a brief period of time, Carl says he realized that this place is like waking up every morning in Disneyland for adults. Carl had played tennis off and on prior to moving to Sun Lakes, so soon after moving in, he joined the Tennis Club and has continued to be very active in that club. Sometime later he was invited to play POP paddle tennis. He gave it a try, liked the game, and has been playing regularly since then. Carl believes that the POP paddle tennis game improves his tennis game, especially the net play. He states that the POP Paddle Tennis Club is a wonderful club where everyone is welcome. Thank you, Carl. We absolutely love having you play our wonderful sport. We have demo paddles for new players, and someone will be available to hit with you. You'll be able to decide quickly whether or not the sport is right for you. We promise that you will not feel like you're just not good enough to play, even with the more experienced players. Our club's emphasis is about having a good time on the courts and getting some really good exercise. Our members are fun-loving, active, awesome people. A new year, a new sport; come out and see what it's all about. Scheduled court time is Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 am. We also play on Sunday mornings at 8 am. For additional info, please check the bulletin board at the paddle courts, which are located by the administration office.
