58 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2019 | Friends we will miss John Robert Cain passed away on January 29, 2019. Beloved husband to Renee, father to Susan and Bill, Papa to grandsons Christopher and Stephen, Uncle to Roger, Molly, Tim, Dan, Kate, Bobby and their spouses, saying that Bob will be missed is an understatement. Bob was known for his quick wit, smile, faith, friendship, generous spirit and love of a microphone. Born to Omar and Dorothy Cain in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934, Bob and his late brother Roger were raised in Youngstown, Ohio and became diehard Ohio State Buckeye fans. Bob graduated from Youngstown State University and was a member of the Kappa Sig Fraternity. Bob served in the Army in Europe and was proud to be the Army's quarterback, even though he was somewhat slight in stature. Based in Germany, after traveling Europe, he retired as a Private First Class. He and Mary Reinette (Renee) McGuire were married in Youngstown in 1959. They raised daughter Susan in St. Petersburg, Florida where Bob was Vice President of Sales to a franchise travel agency company prior to moving to Banning, CA to be involved in their daughter's life. She had married Bill Von Der Ahe from Newport Beach in St. Petersburg on her parents anniversary and then had the two boys. Bob and Renee attended hundreds if not thousands of grandson's soccer, football, basketball, baseball, swim meets, roller hockey and lacrosse games. Bob was also known to sometimes not be a fan of referees. He was proud of the four CIF rings won by his grandsons competing for Corona del Mar High School. Bob was involved in numerous groups at Sun Lakes Country Club including president of the Friendship Club. At one point he thought he had the fastest golf cart cruising the links. Awards and recognitions are too numerous to list, but he cared a lot for the Elks club. His love of family and friends was almost surpassed by his desire to play poker. After his passing, Renee found hundreds of dollars in his wallet left over from poker. Rest easy dear husband, father and Papa; bet you are winning a lot in heaven. Franz "Frank" Ganz passed away on January 15, 2019 at the age of 84. He was born in Indija, Yugoslavia, an ethnic German town on December 4, 1934. He lived there with his family. In 1944 the family had to flee their homeland due to political unrest. They went to today's Czech Republic where he attended school interrupted by air raid sirens and bombings. In 1945 the family was sent back to Yugoslavia and were forced into living in the Gakovo concentration camp. In 1947 his family escaped and walked to Austria. In 1950 the Red Cross connected the family to relatives in the United States and they boarded the Queen Elizabeth and sailed to a better life. They settled in Reading, Pennsylvania where Frank finished up his high school years at Reading High School and met Barbara. He graduated from Penn State in 1958 with an engineering degree. After moving to California he worked for several companies including Litton, IEE, and Laube. He moved to Sun Lakes in 1999 where he was active in the Computer Club and Water Aerobics. He also was President and Co-President of the United German American Club. He and Barbara enjoyed many cruises together with family and friends. He put up a valiant fight but cancer finally won. He died peacefully in his home and is survived by his wife Barbara, son Frank Jr., daughter-in-law Judy, daughter Laurie and son-in-law Michael, brother Karl, six grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Patricia Parkinson Newman passed away peacefully with her faithful dog "JJ" by her side on January 9, 2019. Patricia, known to family and friends as "Pat" or "Grammy," was born on May 1, 1937 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Samantha Ruth Von Elm and Bartlett Ross Parkinson. Growing up she loved school, the outdoors, social clubs and time with friends. While attending East High she was a member of student government and the ski team. She attended the University of Utah, was active in her sorority Alpha Chi Omega, a member of Mortar Board Honor Society and graduated with honors with a degree in elementary education. Pat started dating her future husband, Van Newman and was ceremonially pinned and honored with the coveted "Dream Girl" title of his fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha in 1958. They married in 1960 and had three children. She was tender, caring, and selfless, always placing others before herself and never thinking twice before doing so. Pat was a member of the Sun Lakes community for the last 20 years and was a cherished pillar in the community. She enjoyed book club, birthday club, her fun and crazy card group and Garden Club. She loved animals (especially bunnies and hummingbirds) taking daily walks with her dogs, spending time in her garden, celebrating ALL special occasions, decorating and baking legendary treats for the holidays, reading countless books, filling the room with her infectious laughter and wonderful stories, the best hugs and most of all, being with her friends and family. We will miss her dearly and now have a precious angel watching over us. Pat is now reunited with her husband Van of 60 years and all of their beloved four-legged companions. She's survived by her three children: Elizabeth Jurinek and her husband Gerhard, Suzanne Berhmann and her husband Toby, and James Newman and his wife Kara. She'll be forever remembered and cherished by her nine grandchildren: Nicole Matthews (husband Brandon), Michael Jurinek (fiancé Shilpa), Nathan Behrmann (wife Bridgette), Matthew, Megan and Emily Berhmann, and Taylor, Addy and Devin Newman. .
