36 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2019 Tails & Trails - All Pets SOME DOGS NEED SPACE Four Seasons residents enjoy walking their dogs in our beautiful community - at least most of them. Some pup parents are not so comfortable and go out of their way to take their pups at crazy hours of the morning and late night. Why? Well, for some, it has to do with their dog's temperament and how OTHERS approach or attempt interaction with their dog. Dogs can be like people in some respects; they have distinct preferences that may or may not be related to experience. Sometimes, it's purely genetic when dogs are fearful or exhibit anxiety when interacting with people or other dogs. Dogs with illness or physical discomfort may have little tolerance for human or canine interactions. It's not something that can be trained out of every dog; rather, it's the guardian's challenge to help an anxious dog to be more comfortable while getting some essential exercise. We all need to respect their space. Conversely, pet parents need to recognize that other pedestrians and dogs need space, as well. More on that next month. Sometimes, achieving comfort for the dog is not possible - no matter how hard the guardian and the canine companion have worked on the issue. Tails and Trails has embraced the yellow ribbons initiative to help owners of anxious dogs. If you need a yellow ribbon to help others recognize that your dog needs space, please contact us. If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon on his or her lead or collar, please be sure to allow that dog some space. Please don't assume that, just because your dog is friendly, other dogs will want to meet your pup. Whenever approaching another walker with a dog, be sure to shorten your leash to under two feet and keep your own pup at heel. Never allow your dog to charge another person or dog/human team. Residents who observe dogs with yellow ribbons should respect this designation and avoid approaching the dog and his/her walker. For more about promoting the use of yellow ribbons, visit: http:// www.theyellowdogproject.com/About.html. Our next Tails & Trails general meeting will be Tuesday, May 28 at 4 pm in RCN 3.
