34 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2019 | Silversmiths Lost wax casting has many abilities that are not readily accessible to general Silversmithing. Items can be cast using commercial models, altered commercial models, plastics, items found in nature (like leaves, bark, cones, berries, flowers, etc). Want metal initials for a necklace or key ring? Commercial models can be altered in many ways, changing the entire motif, adding settings, adding one mold to another to make a whole new look and of course you can totally draw your own model by drawing it with wax, like the butterfly and pin. The main learning requirement and the most important feature is learning to control the wax. Not everyone will be able to draw what they want. In addition, if you do not control the wax properly to attach it to the feeders (sprues) your item will not fill with metal. Lost wax is an inspiring method to be used for many things, but is well known for jewelry making. Do you need a temporary loan of medical equipment? Helping Hands maintains an inventory of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes and shower chairs for people living in Ocean Hills Country Club. Call one of the volunteers listed below and we will deliver to your door at no cost to you. You can help a neighbor in OHCC by donating a clean, serviceable item that you are no longer using to Helping Hands. Check your storage areas for the items listed in this article.
