| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2019 | 39 Swim & Wellness As part of my agreement to write golf articles for both the Village Voice and the OHCC Living, I agreed to principally focus articles that advertise and promote our own golf course for the LIVING. To that end, and because we have a substantial number of new homeowners on an ongoing basis, I thought I would focus this article on a very popular aspect of our Golf Club that appealed to me when we moved here in 2009. As a new golfer; the Niners was the answer! The club is active, does not conflict with any of the other competitive tournament play, and easily accommodates the time schedule of all other events. Call Mike or Mina Bell at (760) 295-7840 or send an email to minabell1@hotmail.com to get the latest scoop about the Niners. Dues, Bag Tags, And Niners Play There are very few requirements to play Niners golf, but you do need to be a dues paying member of the Ocean Hills Golf Club and have an Ocean Hills bag tag. 1. To begin with, you must have paid your annual $10 Golf Club dues. As a homeowner, you are automatically entitled to a golf tag but need to join the Golf Club to participate in the Niners as well. 2. Get your BAG TAG at the front desk in the Clubhouse. All residents must have a tag to play on our course 3. Put CLUB DUES into an envelope in the appropriate slot at the golf casa. 4. The Niners always play on Tuesdays and start play on the front nine at noon. We ask that players arrive by 11:45 am so that we can pay out winnings, collect greens fees ($1) and organize teams. 5. Initially, you DO NOT have to have a Men's or Ladies handicap, but if you do, your Niners handicap will be half your 18-hole handicap. Once you have played five postable rounds with Niners, you will be assigned a new Niners handicap. 6. All play is mixed teams; however, if you want to play with certain friends, neighbors or a spouse, that can be arranged. Just a little bit of Niners history. Niners played 39 tournaments in 2018 and 44 golf club members competed in these tournaments, 24 of whom competed regularly enough that they established Niners handicaps (five or more postable rounds). The average tournament had 13 participants, which is down somewhat from 2017. About 25 percent of the rounds had five groups of Niners teeing off beginning at noon, and Niners usually occupy the first tee until 12:30 pm and the front nine until about 2:30 pm. Golfers wanting to play a casual round on Tuesday afternoons should keep this in mind and recall that the Tuesday Men's tournament will occupy the back nine. Speaking from my own experience this is a great way to get started; you will meet other who chose not to play a full 18 holes but still enjoy being out there and swinging the club. Enjoy!
