24 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2019 One of the many pieces of exercise equipment available for use at Four Seasons is the treadmill. Treadmills are located in the work out areas at The Lodge, The Summit, and The Courts. Treadmill usage is an excellent way for residents to stay active, maintain mobility, and increase balance. Regular walking on a treadmill can also be part of an exercise plan for a weight management program. If you have not been exercising or if you have any health concerns, it is recommended that you check with your doctor before using the treadmills. The Safety Committee suggests the following tips for a safe and beneficial time on the treadmill. • Wear athletic shoes when walking on the treadmill. Also wear clothing that is loose enough so you can walk easily. Be aware that pant legs that are too long can easily catch in the tread of the treadmill. • Take a few moments to get acquainted with the treadmill. Locate the on/off control and the emergency stop. Attach the clip to yourself so that the treadmill will stop if you stumble or fall. Learn to use the controls that increase or decrease the speed and incline. • Start the treadmill at a very slow pace and maintain that pace for a few minutes before increasing the speed. • Walk with an upright posture while sucking in your abdomen and tucking in your butt. Do not lean forward. • If you normally use an assistive device for walking, you may need to use the handrails. You might ask your doctor if it is appropriate to try and walk hands-free on the treadmill. Treadmills are easy to use and put less stress on our bodies than many other workouts. Use the treadmill safely. It does more for us than you think as long as it is done with safety in mind. The Safety Committee is still receiving complaints about speeding and stop sign violations. Beaumont Police are patrolling our community and enforcing traffic violations. BPD is here for our safety. Also, if you see something suspicious call Beaumont Police at (951) 769-8500 for non- emergencies and 911 for emergencies. Walkers, please walk on the sidewalks or on the trails and use the crosswalks to cross the streets. Walkers should not walk on the streets. If you're walking at night, wear reflective clothing. The Safety Committee meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. All are welcome. ~ Kaye Harvey, teachharvey@yahoo.com Safety Committee
