46 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2019 What's Going On? After six years of advocating on the part of Carla M. Johnson, it finally happened. On April 2, 2019, Motown's Marvin Gaye who would have been 80 years old was honored by the USPS with a commemorative stamp. The Marvin Gaye Stamp was announced on his birthday at a ceremony at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The commemoration was attended by Motown founder Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, and members of Gaye's family. Gaye died in 1984. He was the ninth artist honored in the postal service's Music Icons stamp series. Now, "What's Going On" with the AACC? First, our very own Les Mays will be facilitating a Spring Maintenance session in the RCN Main Room on Monday, May 6 at 6 pm. He and other invited vendors will be providing home maintenance tips necessary to keep our home systems running smoothly. All Four Seasons residents are welcome to attend this event. Next, we'd like to thank Dr. Terry Tucker for her wonderful presentation at our meeting on April 1. She truly is gifted and has a heart for giving to those who are in need. Dr. Tucker talked about her trips to Africa and her work at the Makerere University School of Health Sciences Department of Nursing. Three of her students wrote letters about themselves and their need to continue their education and tuition assistance. Here is an excerpt: "Greetings, my name is Susan Aaiimwe and I'm a 28-year-old unmarried Ugandan. I am the eighth born out of a family of 12 children. Growing up, there was never enough food or clothes and there were many days we only had milk to drink, as my father was a cattle keeper. I decided to obtain a nursing certificate so I could get a job and help my family. After working several years, I returned to school to obtain a degree in nursing by studying during the day and working nights at the community hospital. "During my work, I realized the challenges women were experiencing during childbirth. Seeing women die during delivery is so traumatizing I decided to specialize in midwifery and women's health." The AACC would like to assist Ms. Aaiimwe with easing her tuition needs of $1,500. For donations, please contact Joyce Allen at (951) 769-4354 or Roxie Elliott at (951) 769-2517. The AACC meets the first Monday of each month in The Lodge Game Room at 6 pm. ~ Regina Thomas African American Cultural Club The Marvin Gaye Forever stamp in front of Washington, D.C.'s historic Howard Theatre where he once performed.
