Woodchucks
Spring has sprung and our Master Toy Builders have made great
progress toward their Christmas "quotas." Carl Strehling is again
building an Heirloom wooden car; 1931 Cadillac Rumble Seat.
President Mitch McConner has his hands full with simultaneous
projects: tennis-themed coasters for the Wounded Warrior
Luncheon at Camp Pendleton and a plethora of small wooden cars.
He also has another Heirloom Truck in the plans and a Jeep kit for
future toy builders. Goldie Weis has made more colorful trains
using a 3-D printer (with Robin's capable help), and a "kit" designed
to help transitioning Marines and their kids after returning from
deployment. Goldie's idea is for a simple kit that can be assembled
by kids and the returning Marine as a way to bond and re-connect.
This is a tough period for all involved. She made 100 kits, and they
are so popular that they are asking for more!
Larry Bowers is painstakingly cutting out Nativity Scene puzzles,
and has assembled dozens of doll-sized high chairs. Murph and
Patty have assembled some amazing log cabins.
Tom Murphy has graciously contributed his time and expertise
building props for the Theater Arts production A Thurber Carnival.
Tom built four replica Winchester Rifles that look real enough to
cause a scare. He calls them "Woodchesters."
It's not too late to join us if you have an idea for a simple toy, and
the commitment to make (or help make) 10 to 20 items. The YMCA
at Camp Pendleton coordinates the Toy Giveaway every Christmas -
this effort along with the Woodchucks' Toys and Donations puts lots
of smiles on young faces.
