alzheimers & dementia helpers It is with great sadness we say goodbye to John Strycula who passed away in November and Colin Rayner who passed away in January. John and his wife Mary Ann were one of the original couples who helped Shirley Almeda get this group going. We thank them for all they did to make Alzheimers & Dementia Helpers what it is today. Colin was part of our Arts & Craft group and was a joy to have. On his last visit to us, he sang with Susan Brown. It was a fun morning for all of us and we will miss him. Our next meeting is Thurs., March 21, at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room; lunch following in our Sun Lakes Restaurant for those who wish. Patients are welcome at this meeting. Drop them off at the Arts & Crafts Room for games and entertainment with our very capable volunteers. Last month, Ray Rendon entertained them with his great voice. Our caregiver support group with Kay Perryman is Tues., March 12, at 1 pm, in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. This group is open to all caregivers, not just caregivers to an Alzheimers patient. Refreshments are served at this meeting. Come enjoy and discuss care giving issues and whatever is on your mind. Meet other men and women going through the same things as you. This support group is open to all caregivers - no patients. If you have questions about the Tuesday support group, contact Diane Stone at 769-0130. If you have questions or would like to learn more about Alzheimers and Dementia, we have reading material we can loan you. For information on joining, call Allison at 7973321. For information on volunteering, call Anne at 845-8700. Continuing our educational information, here is sign #4 of the Five Signs of Alzheimers that sometimes show up before memory loss: LANGUAGE PROBLEMS: Word retrieval and getting out the right words can become apparent before friends and family notice the more common communication problem of repeating stories or questions. For example, the person having trouble may stop in the middle of a sentence, unable to think of the next word. (This can happen to anyone, but when its a sign of dementia, it happens with alarming frequency, and sometimes the person isnt even aware of doing it). Or the wrong word may come out, ie, mouth cleaner for toothbrush or picture stick for TV remote control. genealogical society bible study We meet the 4th Wednesday of the month in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room.
