Firearm Enthusiasts Firearm ownership is a very responsible process of training, safety and familiarity with your firearms. More and more of our members are learning the importance of practice. Take the opportunity to practice at least once a month to maintain your skill level and familiarity with your firearms. Remember to save your targets if you want an evaluation. If you need a shooting partner, check on the roster and make a call. This is a good way to meet your fellow enthusiasts. Meetings are the first Friday of the month at 4 pm in Lodge Ballroom. Contacts, Ron Morgan (951) 315-0466, e-mail ronm627@aol.com, or Steve Meier (909) 528-3342, e-mail sm45para@gmail.com. Seven riders left the Lodge at 9 headed in the direction of Julian for lunch. Reuel and Howard left the larger group near Palm Desert and took the Palms to Pines Highway up to Idyllwild for lunch so that they could be home by 1 pm with a total of 140 miles traveled. Steve and Rob turned off at the Salton Sea to do some exploring and returned to have lunch at the Road House in Palm Springs. Bob, Dan and Rick completed the Julian run for a total of 255 miles and arrived back at Four Seasons at 2:30 pm. A good ride and a good time were had by all. If you would like to join us please drop in to our meetings which are held in the Ballroom at 6 pm on the first Wednesday of the month. ~ Howard Lyon Golfing for Fun Geriatric Golf How was your golf game dear? asked Jacks wife. Well I was hitting it pretty well, but my eyesights gotten so bad I couldnt see where the ball went, he responded. But youre 75 years old Jack! admonished his wife. Why dont you take my brother along? But hes 85 and doesnt even play anymore, retorted Jack. But he has perfect vision. He could watch your ball for you, she returned. The next Friday Jack teed off with his wifes brother looking on. Jack swung, and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. Did you see it? asked Jack. Yup his brother-in-law responded. Well where is it Jack asked peering off into the distance. I forgot. golfing together on Friday a.m., usually each week, weather permitting. We are a kick back bunch of guys attempting to improve our game any way we can, sometimes not complying with all the hundreds of rules golf purists have made up. Our first hike of the month is to Mount San Jacinto. It is a moderate difficulty 6.5 mile gain with a 1,400 foot gain up Cornell Peak. Named by geologist Robert T. Hill after his alma mater, Cornell University, Cornell Peak is one of the more striking features seen when viewed from the Desert Divide; easily recognizable from a distance. This hike is on March 13. Our second hike of the month is on March 27, to Pushawalla Plateau. Joshua Tree National Park has a number of mining districts within its boundaries. There were several gold mines and some of those mines produced a significant amount of the precious metal, especially the Lost Horse Mine. None of the mines within the park are in operation but several can be visited for their historic value. The Pushawalla Plateau Mining District is one of the parks mining districts. The hike starts near Twentynine Palms. The old mining road is rough, very steep and passes some mining ruins. After a 1,060 foot gain, hikers reach the 5,200 foot plateau. From atop the broad, pinon pine and Joshua tree covered plateau unfolds a view of Mt. San Jacinto, the Salton Sea, and some of the northern valleys and ranges of the national park. The hike is 6.5 miles long and classified as Moderate. Many explorers take side trips to exposed mine shafts and the relics of a by-gone era when Theres Gold in them thar Hills was the local cry. As the late Huell Howser would endearingly announce at the end of every segment, Its another example of Californias Gold. For information, call Lynette Simonson Hike Central, (951) 377-0392 ,lynette.simonson@gmail.com ~ Leonard Tavernetti Top: Rugged country of Pushwalla Peak greets hikers Center: Cornell Peak prominently juts out over the desert Bottom: Played out mining shafts attract amateur prospectors FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2013 43
