| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2019 | 7 Did you hear the sirens or see the fire engines? In case you did, it was only a drill! The annual EPAP Drill was Fri., May 3, at 11:45 am. The Banning Fire Dept. joined EPAP for this event to provide emergency services such as fire, rescue and emergency medical services. The scenario for this drill involved a mid-air collision of multiple aircraft over Sun Lakes. Aircraft debris and fuel would fall on Sun Lakes property, causing a house fire, debris on power lines, and injuries to many residents. EPAP and the Fire Department would work together to respond to the multiple incidents resulting from this scenario. The entire EPAP organization participated, including all District EPAP Coordinators, Zone Captains and Medical Rescue Teams. In each District, "injured" victims were "treated" by the Medical Rescue Teams who made certain that proper medical supplies were available. In some cases, Medical Rescue Teams also aided nearby Districts who needed assistance. Three fire engines entered Sun Lakes through three different gates to reach a simulated house fire, and to locate aircraft debris in several different areas of Sun Lakes. Sun Lakes Community Patrol officers were dispatched to assist in locating injured victims, and to provide traffic control at the house fire and debris sites. At the EPAP Operations Center (EOC), the Incident Commander of the event managed all issues and directed all EPAP actions required to respond to the event. The Communications Unit radio operators maintained contact with the Districts, and were busy handling radio messages and monitoring District status. The EPAP Patrol Unit secured the various debris sites until the Fire Dept. arrived. The Patrol Unit also assisted in street closures and rerouting of traffic. The EPAP Animal Rescue Unit was called to assist with a lost dog, which was kept safe at the Animal Rescue kennel until the owner could be located. The success of this EPAP Drill was assured by the enthusiastic support of our District Delegates, EPAP Coordinators and all volunteers who put in extra effort to learn new skills and prepare for this event.
