FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2019 25 Emergency Preparedness Committee Most Four Seasons residents are not firefighters. What we should be like is Jim Carrey's character Fire Marshal Bill. We should attempt to prevent fires from starting by doing an inspection of our homes. We need working smoke alarms. We need to stay in the kitchen when we are cooking food — ie. cooking, frying or boiling. Space heaters must be kept a minimum of three feet away from things that can burn. All electrical cords should be in good condition (not damaged or cracked). There should be two ways out of every room in your home. Know what to do if your smoke alarm sounds. Carbon Monoxide detectors should be installed and inspected for operability (ie. batteries) at least twice a year. Clothes dryers are another source of fire. Use metal dryer ducts to prevent lint buildup. No matter what kind of duct that you have, you should clean it regularly. Clean all visible lint after using the dryer. Clean the lint filter with soapy water at least once a month. Remove the lint filter and vacuum inside the filter hole once a month. Clean inside, behind and underneath the dryer with a vacuum to remove lint build up. Wash twice and line dry all clothes that are exposed to volatile chemicals like gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents, or paints and stains. Avoid using liquid fabric softener on all cotton clothes made of fleece, terry cloth, or velour. Liquid fabric softener added to cotton fabric speeds up burning of the fabrics. If you want a softener, use dryer sheets instead. Buy your next dryer with a moisture sensor. Thermostats can allow the dryer to run longer than necessary. Golf cart batteries can easily start a fire if they are overcharged. Check the following items. 1. Make sure your battery charger cables are properly connected. 2. Do not charge the battery longer than necessary. 3. Check the battery for overheating or "boiling" over. 4. Properly maintain your battery and replace it if it will not hold a charge. The EPC committee meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. The next EPC meeting is Tuesday, June 18. ~ Michael A. The Landscape Committee walks the Springdales, Monarchs, Laurels, Heritage and Inner Circle every month. We have noticed that many of the front yard drains are flooded. When flooding occurs in the front yards it is because back yards are being watered too much. Now is the time to adjust your sprinklers, or you may want to ask your landscape contractor to assist you with what the proper water times should be for each season. Here are some water conservation tips from Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District: • Check your sprinkler system frequently, and adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk or street. • Plant during the spring or fall when watering requirements are lower. • Minimize evaporation by watering during early morning hours, when temperatures are cooler and winds are lighter. • Divide your watering cycles into shorter periods to reduce run-off and allow for better absorption every time you water. • Only water your lawn when needed. You can tell this by simply walking across your lawn. If you leave footprints, it's time to water. • Water your summer lawns once every three days, and your winter lawn once every five days. • More plants die from over-watering than from under-watering. Be sure only to water plants when necessary. • Place an empty tuna can on your lawn to catch and measure the water output of your sprinklers. If you are catching more than 1/4" of water, you are watering too much. • Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and save hundreds of gallons of water a year. The Landscape Committee meets every third Tuesday of the month at 1 pm in the RCN Building. ~ Linda Ruoff Greetings! Well spring has sprung and our Annual Fashion Show "Springtime at the Flower Market" is in full bloom. Tickets to the event have been purchased, and our models have practiced their hearts out! We are all excited to let the show begin. The event takes place on June 1 in The Lodge Ballroom, and doors will open at 11 am. A buffet lunch will be provided. In addition, we will raffle off some beautiful gift baskets, and tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the event. ~ Pamela Morales, pamelamorales26@gmail.com Social Committee
