30 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JUNE 2019 | From the President – Tom Moore: From now to August 6 we're going to be advertising our charity tournament. This year's beneficiary will be the Tahquitz High School Boys and Girls Golf Teams. We will play a 4-person scramble format. Entry fee will be $10 per player (plus $32 green fees). This year's entry fee will include a hot dog lunch, including chips and a soft-drink. We will use a "Shotgun" start, tee- time will be 7:30 am. Come on out and enjoy the fun! Player attendance is improving, due in part to two factors: 1. The weather has improved considerably (this winter was exceptionally cold!). 2. The volunteer "Course Marshal" program is definitely helping to speed up play, and it is resulting in approximately 30 minutes quicker pace of play. This position is perfect for golfers that are injured or don't happen to like a particular game, but still want to enjoy the "social" component of our club. Our road-trip game is set! We will be playing at the Soboba Springs Golf Course at 8:30 on Thurs., June 20. We have negotiated a green fee of $40 ($5 off the regular price). Here's Kati's golf tip of the month: One of the major fundamentals of the golf swing is the grip, that is, how you hold the club throughout the swing. Bar none, the best teaching aid for this is a molded training grip. I recommend using a 9 iron as you can chip, pitch, and full swing with it. Due to the molding, the hands fit together as they are supposed to, and when the club is swung, the hands stay in place. The grip comes in both right and left-hand versions. The cost is around $6 - 8 installed and can be removed later. Just make sure it's installed correctly by checking with your professional. Good Golfing ~ Kati Biszantz, LPGA Class A/Life Member *Former LPGA Tour Pro *Instructor at Rancho Cal GC and Hemet GC That's all for now… From the Tournament Chair – Addis Scott: From the Tournament Committee: You may sign up at our prior Tuesday golf event or contact the Tournament Committee by email at hemet4sgc@gmail.com Our June 2019 Game Schedule is: June 4 at 7:30 am - (T) – Low Net – Post as Tournament June 11 at 7:30 am - Team: One, Two, Three Best Net Scores June 18 at 7:30 am - Individual: Blind Draw Game at End of Round June 20 at 8 am (Thursday) - Away Game at Soboba June 25 at 7:30 am - Partners: Best Net Score Per Hole From the Handicap Chair – Melody Lewis: Origin of the Golf Handicap The term originates from a trading game, popular in pubs in the 17th and 18th centuries, known as "hand in cap." The game required three sides: two players and a referee. Each player would have an item to trade with the other, and it was the responsibility of the referee to determine the amount that would make up a difference in value between the items. The players would place money into a pot, then put their hands into a cap. When they pulled their hands out, an open palm would signal an acceptance of the trade, while a fist indicated rejection. If both sides agreed – either acceptance or refusal – the referee would receive the pot. If the traders disagreed, the player accepting the deal received the pot. The key to the game was how equitably the referee would assign the difference in value between the traded items, as he would benefit only if both sides agreed. If the referee wasn't fair, he would lose out. "Hand in cap" became known as "handicap," and the word transferred to other endeavors associated with betting – first horse racing in the 1850s followed by golf a couple of decades later. From the Membership Chair – Elliot Yaeger: We welcome our newest member Randy Johnson to our club. Our membership now stands at 126. We have tournaments every Tuesday throughout the year including individual play as well as team play. Tee times are 7:30 am from April through September and 8 am from October through March. It is still not too late to join. Just stop by the front desk at the Lodge and pick up an application. Complete the application and return it to the Lodge with a check for $66. This will include membership to the club as well as membership to the SCGA, who will provide you with an official handicap twice a month. If you have any questions, please contact Elliot Yaeger at (951) 223-3735 or ey1611@gmail.com From the Rules Chair – Tom Johnson: Golf Tips from: Kati Biszantz, Instructor at 4 Seasons/Hemet GC (951) 304-0442 If the ball hits you or your equipment, NO PENALTY. The rule does not allow you to put yourself or your equipment intentionally in a position to affect the movement of the ball. Have you ever hit the ball twice in the same swing? Used to be two strokes - now only one stroke, the one you actually made. And finally, dropping the ball now from knee height rather than from your shoulder.
