Summer has swept in on a whirl of exciting play on courts with racquets and basketballs! There was a rousing inaugural Basketball H-O-R-S-E Tournament played with men and women on the T1 Court on May 8. There were some definite good athletes out there making incredible shots, and then there were one or two (no name mentioned) athletes good in other sports that found the aerodynamics in basketball a mystery. Carol Alberts and Lorraine Novellino proudly represented the women. Carol was the last woman standing, helped by her consistent layup shot! The last two men came down to Ted Bergerson and Steve Papapetru, then Ted played the backhand layup shot miraculously done with his condor-like wingspan. Steve considered it momentarily and then conceded the game to Ted. Those two winners were announced at the Thursday luncheon, which was still held even though the Pickelball Madness Round Robin tournament was rained out. It will be rescheduled later this summer. Summer pickleball beginner lessons will have begun June 1. Herb Livsey, Mike Hoggatt and other coaches will instruct those that want to learn this fun game. Come join them at the HOA courts on Saturdays from 9:15 am to about 11 am. The lessons will continue Mondays and Wednesdays later in the day on Court T1 eventually. Lessons are free, open to all residents and Racquet Club membership is not required. Tennis has a new drop-in play schedule: Mon./Wed./Fri. from 8 to 9:30am at Tennis Court 3. We have a Ladeez Day (tennis and pickleball) Tournament scheduled for Sept. 26, and we are looking for more tennis players. Please contact Lorraine Novellino or Tami Papapetru. Badminton will resume its amusing and enjoyable lessons and play on Wednesday evenings beginning June 5, at 6:30 pm at the Clubhouse courts. We will play again on June 19. You do not want to miss the laughs, so come join us on June 5! Paddle Tennis continues to have a drop-in from 2 to 4 pm at the HOA courts every Monday. Please join this group of fun and welcoming players that are increasing in size, and will welcome all levels of play. They even go out for pizza often after they play. Exercise, companionship, and food, you cannot beat the combination! The Racquet Club Lanai Party is Aug. 7. Please mark your calendars – there will be great food, music, awards, and excellent camaraderie. We will miss you if you are not there!
