Of course, we love summer: What's not to like? Beach vacations, backyard picnics, family reunions—it's all fun and games. But along with summer fun comes summer heat. As the weather turns significantly warmer, older adults are especially vulnerable to heat- related ailments. As we age, our ability to r e s p o n d to summer heat can become a serious problem. Examples of heat-related illness symptoms can include heat stroke, heat edema (swelling in your ankles and feet when you get hot), heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Fortunately, there are precautions that can be taken to help to avoid encountering any heat-related illnesses. Here are some tips to stay healthy and safe this summer. • Drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. • If you're going to be exercising in the heat, sip water throughout your workout and consider bringing a damp towel packed in ice to cool yourself off. • Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day (1 - 5 pm) • Wear light-colored and loose clothing. • Finally listen to your body! The first stages of heat stress are muscle cramps, nausea, headaches, goose bumps, and a decrease in sweat rate. Follow these tips and you will be sure to have a fun and "cool" summer!
