46 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2019 Gloria Hendry is an American film and theatre actress, singer, producer and writer from Newark, New Jersey. In grade school she excelled in sports: basketball, touch football, volleyball, and softball. She was also a sprinter, swimmer, cyclist, and gymnast. "Too bad she's a boy," the school boys said, as the muscles rippling throughout her body were too much for them to handle. In music, she performed every Saturday as first chair Violinist with the Essex County All-City Orchestra. Hendry left home after high school to earn a degree in legal studies. Then she obtained a position as a legal secretary with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in New York City. Her natural beauty led her to other positions in modeling. One day someone said, "Why don't you apply for a bunny position at the New York Playboy Club?" She applied and became one of the few bunnies of color. In 1972 she landed the biggest role of her career as the "Bond Lady," Rosie Carver, in the 007 James Bond film Live and Let Die. Hendry made history as one of the first lead female action figures to perform her own stunts when stuntwomen of color were nonexistent. Her most significant roles were during the beginning of "Independent Film Making" and the era of "Blaxploitation" in "Black Caesar," starring opposite Fred Williamson, a football star aka "The Hammer," and in "Black Belt Jones," starring opposite karate champion, Jim Kelly. Hendry has written a compelling autobiography, Gloria, sharing her life and career. It is extremely personal, candid, and filled with many glossy rare photos. The book is in an oversized format, lushly printed and illustrated. This must-read piece of art is available on Amazon. Gloria Hendry graciously sang at the AACC "Taste of Soul" event last February during Black History month. She continues to perform live at different venues like Comic-Con San Diego and is currently filming two feature films this month. Gloria has demonstrated her ability to remain relevant with fans all over the world for 46 years, and that's what makes her extraordinary and unique. Mark your calendars for Dec. 14, our AACC Christmas Gala. The AACC meets the first Monday of each month in The Lodge Game Room at 6 pm.
