FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2019 59 Bridge For Fun Duplicate Bridge It seems we went from cold and rainy to hot and sunny overnight. What happened to spring? We now have two rubber bridge groups here on Mondays and Wednesdays at noon. Because of a conflict with the Duplicate, we need more players for our Monday group. If you haven't played in a while check us out on Monday. We call ourselves "Bridge for Fun" because we are a relaxed bridge club. Don't hesitate to stop by and see for yourself. If you have never played, but would like to learn, come and watch and see if bridge is the game for you. As we get older, bridge is a great way to keep our minds sharp since it is a game of strategy. It's not an easy game to play but once you learn, it becomes kind of addictive! For more information on our Monday group contact Sandie Urie at (951) 769-8307 and for information on the Wednesday group contact Verina Rector at (951) 769-1687. Both meet at noon in the Game Room. ~ Tom Halley Current and former Bridge players, have you ever groused to the Bridge gods and the Great Shuffler about the cards that you get? Have you thought that you play just as well as others? In the year 1857, some of the regular losers at Whist, the great- grandfather of our modern game of contract bridge, were fed up with the constant winners. That night two rooms of the London club were used for the first duplicate tournament in history. The same cards were played in both tables in each room. After a few hands had been played, it became evident that the good players did better than the poor players. The experiment showed that it's possible to do well without getting good cards. Join us on the third Tuesday of July (the 16th) in the RCN Great Room at 1 pm to learn about duplicate bridge. We'll talk about the mechanics of the game including how the scoring determines who the winners are. We'll also talk about the ACBL, which is the governing body of duplicate contract bridge in North America, and the local facilities where you can play duplicate bridge. We may even play a few hands to illustrate just how duplicate bridge is actually played. Duplicate Bridge can be serious, maybe more serious than Party Bridge, but people who attend duplicate bridge clubs still have lots of fun, and act more like family than competitors. I hope you will join us. ~ Kirk Freyermuth kafreyer@ frontier.com Canasta Join us for an afternoon of friendship and fun while playing a game of Hand and Foot Canasta. We meet Thursdays in the RCN Lobby from 12:45 to 4 pm. Table assignments are distributed at 12:45 pm. Each week you may play with someone different, giving you an opportunity to meet new friends and/or visit with old friends. We supply the cards, so just bring yourself and a desire to have fun. If you don't know how to play, we are always happy to set up a teaching table — by the end of the afternoon you will have mastered the game. Come join us. ~ Pam Morales
