FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2019 7 By Sandra Butler-Roberts We meet many great neighbors here at Four Seasons. Making new friends is one of the best highlights of living here. Once we get beyond trying to remember all their names, we get glimpses of an intriguing life before making that decision to live here in our paradise. We would like to feature a few of the lives of those willing to share. I would like to begin by sharing what I found out about my friend, Elizabeth Westbrook. Hopefully, this seed article will stimulate others to share their stories. Elizabeth and Phillip Westbrook moved to Four Seasons in 2009. As I got to know them, I discovered that Elizabeth is a talented dancer, a professional musician (playing keyboards, bass, and singing), a teacher, and a volunteer. Here is a glimpse of her story… In 1969, Elizabeth, her parents and two siblings moved to Los Angeles from the Philippines with only their suitcases. Her mother was a teacher, as well as a gifted performer, and her father was a civil engineer. She was always interested in dance, and in the early '70s was choreographing dances for the youth of the Filipino Club of Highland, CA. After graduating in 1978 from San Gorgonio High, she became an avid marathon runner, winning hundreds of medals and trophies, which she later donated and awarded to her students. At age 24, she joined a band and performed for Elks, Moose, and weddings before beginning her stint of entertaining at Norton Air Force Base, which is now the San Bernardino International Airport. She performed at Officer and NCO clubs after receiving her security clearance, which gave her the opportunity to visit all 50 states. She had many tours overseas for the Pacific Air Forces, performing at bases in Guam, Philippines, Japan, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, South Korea, and Hawaii. She did a Department of Defense Tour in Turkey in 1992 during the aftermath of Desert Storm. She actually stayed in Tent City with the troops. This tour also included Italy, Greece, and Spain - including the 1992 Expo in Seville. Elizabeth calculates that over a 10-year period she performed at 65 Air Force bases in 36 states, seven countries, and Guam, for a total of 1,632 nights! For the next chapter of her life, she earned a teaching credential at CSUSB, and taught for 21 years for the Redlands Unified School District. Utilizing her amazing experiences and talents, she wrote a school song. She also volunteered her time for kids by creating a chess club, Readers Theater, and Fantastic Kids Club (FKC). The FKC performed for a Senior Facility and Veterans Hospital. She met her husband, Phillip, in 1998. Their first date was a 5K run at the Coronado Bridge and they have been inseparable ever since. Phillip shared with me that he was stationed at many of the bases during his military career where Elizabeth performed, and now that they are retired, they plan on visiting many of those places together. Elizabeth retired from teaching in 2016, and continued volunteering for the next three years. Phillip recently retired in 2018, and the couple can be seen impressing Four Seasons residents with their magnificent dance moves in the Ballroom. Now you can find them around the area hiking, riding bikes, swimming, playing music, and, of course, dancing with our friends at our fun dance groups here at Four Seasons. Recently Elizabeth has been approved by the Board as a member of the Communications Board so she can add her creativity to the Breeze and our website. If you have a fascinating life story to share, your neighbors would be interested in learning about you. Just send your idea to: "Fascinating Friends of Four Seasons" at printnpixel@gmail.com, and we will contact you to write the article together. Articles are due by the 8th of the month prior to the Breeze publication month. Fascinating Friends of Four Seasons Elizabeth performing Elizabeth and Phillip Westbrook
