Emergency Preparedness
Advisory Committee
By Sherrie Chaparro, Resident
This committee, known as EPAC, is one of the seven committees currently
advising the Board. The others are: Communications, Design Review, Finance,
Interior Design, Recreation, and Welcome.
One of the purposes of EPAC is to develop and implement a plan to ensure that
our community is ready when a catastrophic emergency occurs. And let's face it,
in California we are talking about "The Big One." Experts advise that in the event
of a major earthquake we should be prepared to live without water, power and
outside assistance (e.g. firefighters and paramedics) for at least three days.
The committee has developed a plan which relies upon CERT-trained residents
to organize an immediate response. CERT is not a breath mint. It is an acronym for
Community Emergency Response Team. The CERT program educates volunteers
in basic response skills: Fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization
and disaster medical operations. These resident volunteers will be our "first
responders."
EPAC meets monthly. As a member of the committee, you would help to plan
resident practice drills, publicize the availability of CERT training, maintain
an up-to-date list of CERT-trained residents, set up refresher courses for those
who are CERT-trained and perform an annual supply inventory. The committee
coordinates its efforts with the Ham Radio and Neighborhood Watch groups.
Please consider applying to be a member of this important committee. The life
you save may not be just your own, but your neighbor's as well.
