| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2019 | 29 Warmer weather is FINALLY in the air, and the Sewing, Etc. group is getting on board! Our Spring Luncheon was a resounding success (thank you, Karen Lohr)! At the luncheon, we enjoyed a presentation from the San Pasqual Academy, and learned how they assist teenagers in the foster care system in getting their high school diploma. Without San Pasqual's nurturing support, many of these kids would not receive that most necessary piece of paper. The pillowcases that we make for them are (sometimes) one of their few possessions. Several ideas were discussed for future projects to benefit these hard-working students. In July, we will be finishing up the bags for the Woodchuck's toy trains. These will be Christmas gifts for Camp Pendleton children later in the year. Also in July, we will be learning how to use leftover jeans in projects. Jeans always seem to go on forever… but (surprise!) When their time appears to be done, they still have a future! Our regular schedule: You will hear cordial conversation (and sometimes a lot of laughter) in the Sewing Room on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons as we all work on our own projects. Thursday mornings may be open sewing time or special projects. Tuesday afternoons are busy with MaryLu Belisle and the knitters. On the second Saturday, we have a 'Sew-In', and on the fourth Saturday, the Wearable Arts group will be up to something fun with Pam Bechill. A complete list of happenings is on the Bulletin Board in the Sewing Room. If anyone would like to participate in our activities and is unable to get to the Clubhouse, please contact Chris Sanderson at (858) 442- 1834. We have volunteers ready to pick you up! Please visit our website, lovingly updated by Terri Eckhardt. http://ohccsewing.wixsite.com/ohccsewing All are welcome to join us. Dues are $7 per year. The next meeting will be Aug. 1, 9:30 am in the Ladies Club Room. Sewing, Etc. Village Vets I am writing this article on D-Day, June 6, the 75th Anniversary of the invasion at Normandy, a decisive battle in ending WWII. In today's Wall Street Journal there is about a half page article, devoted to the invasion, our own Village Vet Jack Port, and his participation during and after D-Day. Below is but a small portion of the article written about Jack and the 57,000 American troops landing on the shores of Normandy. Much of the story was written from Jack's own prospective and his events leading up to the day. "Jack Port was part of the biggest amphibious invasion in history. It laid the foundations of the trans-Atlantic alliance that has underpinned decades of trade and security ties across the west." Thank you Jack and all that worked toward the successful outcome in our history. At our general Village Vets, meeting on June 27, our speaker was Anita Simon, playwright and OHCC resident. She discussed her research into German POW and internment issues in America during WW2. We have been invited to the Pet Lovers annual summer meeting, on Aug. 10. The speaker will be Staff Sergeant Jason Morgan, USAF from Dallas Texas. He was a participant in the Military Paralympics (War Games) and author of the bestselling book A Dog Called Hope. Because of the limited space, we will have a sign-up sheet available at our general meeting for those wishing to attend the Pet Lover's meeting in August. Save the date for our Village Vets Holiday Party, Dec. 15 at Abravanal Hall. We are planning to host about 20 active military personnel and spouses. You can still have a paver with your inspirational words, on Inspiration Hill. Please go to the Clubhouse Front Desk and submit your form with an appropriate check. Members enjoyed our Spring Luncheon
