34 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2019 | Welcome aboard. Our spring sailings for April and May went well with about four boats going out each month. I took out a boat with a full crew and I enjoyed taking our new captain candidate, Phil Roebuck through his "On the water" testing requirements. Phil is a real student of sailing and over the past few years, he has completed a number of sailing classes with the U.S. Coast Guard in Oceanside. So with the benefit of being given a larger 36 ft. Catalina to sail for the day, Phil took over and did an excellent job completing all the requirements of the test. So Congratulations to our new Capt. Phil. However, we now have more able captains than we have able mates. So those of you who perhaps have been taking the sailing classes provided by our Fleet Captain Jim Barbee, and Capt. Gerald Gorman, and feel interested in sailing more… consider becoming a 1st Mate. We provide a Mate candidate with the preparation text material to complete the written test portion. Then the candidate should go sailing with a few different captains who will explain and show them the various required duties of a mate. It is a great opportunity for those of you who want to go deeper in your sailing skills. We are also appointing a Nomination Chairperson, to organize candidates for our various club officers' position. All positions are open for volunteers to join in and help manage our club, with no position requiring sailing experience except for the Fleet Captain position. Sailing is not a spectator sport, but rather a "get aboard"and "help our club where needed." Our Captain Daniel Sansoni is deep into preparation to get our summer party organized for Aug. 24, which will be held on the Lanai. More details will be provided at our July club meeting. Summer is upon us so better weather, sunshine and wind will be making this the best time of year to go sailing. So come out and join us for some blue water sailing, the fun is in the doing it. I hope to see you sailing with us soon… and remember one hand for you and one hand for the boat… and which way do you wrap a line around a winch? You are correct, clockwise… well done. Cast off all lines, let's go sailing. ~ Commodore Forrest Newburg Sailing Club
