| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2019 | 7 Defensive Driving includes: • Being aware of your surroundings • Driving at the correct speed • Always expecting the unexpected • Being prepared to avoid accidents • Driving with skill and alertness Driving Alertness - Safe drivers are alert and avoid distractions such as: • Talking to passengers • Multitasking • Adjusting the navigation system • Changing radio settings • Eating while driving • Using mobile phone or any electronic devices Driving Foresight - Examples of aiming to reduce the risk of collision by anticipating situations: • Not assuming other drivers will drive safely • Not everyone has been Safe Driver certified! • Anticipating hazards • Scan the road ahead for traffic and/or debris so you're prepared, rather than reactive • Keep vehicles properly maintained • Complete pre-trip inspections & always wear a seatbelt Driving Judgment - Safe drivers use good judgment to make decisions quickly & wisely. • Resist the temptation to make risky and/or sudden moves • Pass other vehicles only when it's safe • Always look for the safest route • Remain courteous on the road Safe Driving Techniques - Safe drivers take the time to: • Recognize hazards • Avoid collisions • Become familiar with traffic laws in the area • Keep vehicles properly maintained • Are aware of traffic conditions that may affect driving • Be cognizant of traffic ahead, behind & on both sides • Focus on the task at hand: Driving! Safe Driving Do's - Safe drivers do the following: • Use their signals • Are considerate when changing lanes • Maintain the speed limit • Follow at a safe distance • Don't fight tailgaters • Remember to turn their lights on • Are respectful and patient • Maintain control of their behavior • Avoid distractions Safe Driving Don'ts - Unsafe drivers do the following: • Drive aggressively • Tailgate or speed • Use electronic devices, including their cell phone • Eat while driving • Don't wear their seat belt • Assume other motorists know what they are doing • Engage in road rage Stay Safe - There are so many things to do and remember, but safe driving is paramount when you're on the go. Below are some facts and tips to remember: • Treat buckling-up as a routine when getting in the car • Keep a safe distance between you and the car in front • Don't drive while fatigued • More than eight out of 10 crashes occur at speeds lower than 40 mph • Deaths have occurred at 12 mph-about the speed you drive through a parking lot • Nearly 75 percent of all crashes happen within a few miles from home Safe Driving National Safety Month: Defensive Driving COMMUNITY CORNER No kissing while driving
