20 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2019 | The Ocean Hills Pet Lovers Club is proud to announce its very special annual summer meeting on Sat., Aug. 10 at 10:30 am in Abravanel Hall. Along with the Pet Lovers Club members, the meeting will be open to the OHCC residents starting at 10:30 am to hear motivational speaker Staff Sergeant Jason Morgan who is coming in from Dallas Texas for the weekend. We still have room for others to join in to hear Jason speak. PLC President Ellen Kippel does need you to respond to her before Aug. 4 since seats are limited and she has to know how many extra chairs will be needed. Contact her at petloversclub@ cox.net or by phone at (760) 305-7114. The Carlsbad Animal Hospital posted this warning about heat stroke, walking dogs on hot pavement, and leaving dogs in the car: Here are the corresponding temperatures between the ambient air and asphalt and car temperatures AIR Temperature/ASPHALT Temperature 77°/125° (At this temperature, skin destruction can occur in 60 seconds) 86°/135° (An egg can fry at 131 degrees) 87°/143° (In 85° heat, a car can heat to 102° in five minutes and to 120° in 30 minutes) Pet Lovers Club Yiddish Club Chai, Yiddish Clubbers! Our June Picnic for Passion and Patriotism was an enjoyable success, and through lots of labor on our own, we were able to achieve our goal of donating funds to three groups: 1.) the Yiddish Book Center that's saved more than a hundred thousand books written in Yiddish, 2.) the Yiddish Arts and Academics Association of North America (based in San Diego), and 3.) our very own Woodchucks who create that bounty of fabulous toys for the kids at Camp Pendleton! What pleasure it gives us to make these donations to further the important work being done by these groups… what a mitzvah they are doing and how nice to be a part of it. We are working on our program for Aug. 19, and torn between two options, both interesting and involving, one being a discussion on ethics, led by our VP, Don Kent; and the other a film about an artist/poet/activist sent to us by the Yiddish Book Center, followed by discussion. Your board will meet to review the options and will inform you of our decision via email. In either case, please mark your calendar for the program on Aug. 19, at 7 pm. Come! Participate! Mingle! Have a nosh! On the business end of things, we are still looking for a slate of officers for next year. Don has a lot of ideas and promises to be helpful along the way. (We do have a secretary continuing, thanks Joann Bush!) Please contact me so that we can collaborate. Send me an email or call. Let's keep the good times rolling. Speaking of planning ahead, our meeting on Oct. 21, will feature an excellent program and, also, elections; and on Sun., Dec. 22, will be our luncheon with super entertainment. Mark your calendars. It'll be fun. Meanwhile, gey gezunterheit! Lainy
