FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2019 57 Tennis Club The old folks did something new. Club members braved the heat on a sizzling hot July Saturday to participate in the first-ever club- organized Summer Fun Doubles Tournament. Ten doubles teams were formed to compete in the Tournament. They were divided into thoughtfully named Group I and Group II, with five teams in each group. Immediately following the official formalities, which included some blather about how the matches were going to be arranged and scored, an obligatory exchange of pleasantries, and a group photo shoot, the 10 freshly partnered-without-benefits (i.e. arranged court marriages without courting), teams marched (that's more impressive than just walking or limping) onto The Courts and began the Round Robin stages of the Tournament, consisting of four rounds of eight games per round. Over the course of nearly three hours, each doubles team played 32 games in their four matches. Having consumed countless bottles of ice water and sodas, the players sloshed over to The Courts patio to watch the scores on the Jumbotron score board (actually just an erasable whiteboard, but it worked). Evidence that the Wizard(s) of Odds who concocted the team- pairing managed to keep things reasonably balanced: the scores were so close that at the end of the third round, there was still no apparent winning team in sight. After four rounds though, Team Larry Martin/Tina Soeten from Group I and Team Chuck Beckman/Larry Workman from Group II, emerged as the top scorers within their respective group, with Chikako Ferguson/Steve Hovey and Brian Flowers/Tim Jones coming in second in their respective groups. The two top teams advanced to the championship match. In the end, Team Beckman/ Workman won the match 8 games to 5, and took home the championship title of the 2019 Summer Fun Doubles Tournament. Event organizers and contributors included Chuck Beckman, Bernadette Chance, Chikako Ferguson, Stan Lam, Sheryl Beckman, Howard and Louise Lyon, Howard Levine, and Bernadette Martin. Also, new for the Tennis Club is our website https://sites.google. com/view/tennis-fourseasons/home. Many thanks to Larry Workman for getting our site set up and to Laura Emerson who has volunteered to be the website manager. This will be the place to visit to sign up to play tennis, get information on upcoming events, see photos of past events and get helpful tips on improving your tennis skills. Now if I can just get my Apple II and dial-up modem to connect. ~ Steven Hovey, sahovey47@hotmail.com Above: Summer Fun Tournament Right: The Championship Match Teams Below: The Minnie Awards Program
