The 8-Ball Club Every month, the 8-Ball Club is rife with fun, learning new skills and friendly competition to keep us entertained, sharp and happy to be a part of our great group. All players are welcome and all skill levels are present within our group. We won't assume you need to be taught unless you ask. If you do ask for help, any member will help or find someone who will — anything from how to rack the balls or a simple rule clarification to the fine points of the game. If you wish, you can pick a mentor and that player will show you all you need to enjoy the many games of American pool. All you need to do is show up on our practice nights, Wednesday, Friday or nontournament Mondays at 7 pm, introduce yourself and play or ask for help — simple as that. If you wish to become a member, an officer of the club will be there to take your information. We hold our team meetings on the first Wednesday of the month, have our in-house 8-Ball tournament on the second Wednesday, both at 7 pm. Then our in-house 9-Ball tournament is on the third Saturday of the month at 1 pm. Our "traveling tournaments" are nights when we either go to other nearby communities or host those communities here for team tournaments, usually on Monday. Check the message board in the Billiards Room for dates and locations. It is never mandatory or expected that any member participate in tournaments, anyone is welcome to be a spectator or to cheer on your team. To qualify to participate in a tournament, you must be a registered team member and have practiced with the team at least once during the week before that tournament. Our latest traveling tournament to Hemet had them besting us by two games, not bad really considering 16 games were played. Better luck next time. Our monthly 8-Ball tournament was a hard fought battle with Dewey Allen, Rick Loney and Kenny Payne in the semifinals. Dewey beat Rick then Kenny beat Dewey in regular play 40 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2013 | sports activities Billiards for Fun to get to the finals. The first of the final games was won by Dewey but Kenny clinched the win by taking the final game. The in house 9-Ball tournament was special for Roland Harrah who went undefeated all day to take the monthly honor. Although a few original members have dropped out, we now total 30 consistent members: 20 men and 10 women. Although Four Seasons only has four billiards tables, we all share and everyone has a great time! When asked what they liked about the group, Pete Antoine said: "Every week members play with different people, which ultimately strengthens their games." Ron Erickson agreed: "It's a challenge to play with someone different each week." "We have really friendly players, and everyone gets along," added Gene Dwyer. Mike Olson said he "enjoys the camaraderie," and Mike Saperstein added, "It's not serious, there's no stress… it's just fun!" Both Rich Meumann and John Johnson commented that "it's a great way to meet new people." (See photo of our guys.) Although we have 10 women who share one table, all the women are accommodating, encouraging, and learn from each other. Laurie Larson expressed how fun it is for her "to learn a new sport." Sharon Chase said, "It's such an inviting atmosphere; it's the first time I've wanted to pick up a cue stick." Gracy Luna said, "It's actually relaxing, and one of the two best reasons I come to the Lodge!" Norma Jean Cohen said, "The girls surprise me at how good they are already! We have a great time." (See photo of our girls.) The best comment, however, was by Johnny Ramirez. When asked what he likes best about the Billiards for Fun Group, he replied: "The potlucks!" Our bi-monthly potluck in February marked the highest attendance to date — we've grown from two tables end-to-end to three tables (see photo). Hosted by John and Mary Campbell, the food was amazing (as always) and there was lots of it! We always have a great time chatting, laughing and socializing. Anyone interested in joining our fun group, please contact Eileen Gilbert at (951) 922-6829 or just drop by and check us out any Tuesday from 1 to 3 pm in the Billiards Room.
