Native plants… I'm sure most have heard that term. Did you know that California has more plant species than any other state in our nation? And did you know that at least a third of California's native plants are found no where else in the world? But what exactly is a "native plant?" Here are a few definitions of a native plant. 1. A plant occurring naturally in an area and not introduced by man; indigenous (GardenWeb); 2. With respect to a particular ecosystem, a species that, other than as a result of an introduction, historically occurred, or currently occurs in that ecosystem (US Fish and Wildlife Service); 3. A plant that lives or grows naturally in a particular region without direct or indirect human intervention (USDA and US National Arboretum). Most of Southern California's native plant population have adapted to our dry hot summers and can still be showy even throughout the summer months. Armed with a good list and a smart nursery, gardeners here in Beaumont can fill their yards with a variety of trees and plants that will look beautiful for years. Some of the native trees found here in Four Seasons Beaumont are Desert Willows, varieties of Oaks, Pines, Cottonwoods, Sycamores, and some types of Cyprus. Native shrubs in our community may include Coyote Bush, Desert Lavender, Lupine, Sages, and Toyon. Within the private gardens here, one may find Douglas Iris, varieties of Penstemon, Sages, California Poppy, and along Trail C there is a spectacular showing of Matilija Poppy (or to some… the fried egg poppy!). We also have many native grasses adorning our community: Berkeley Sedge, California Fescue, Deer Grass, and Wild Rye. By planning to use native plants in your garden you will not only save on water costs but you will also make our feathered friends happy without the use of bird feeders. Gardening has been a passion of mine for years. So it was no surprise to my family or friends when I joined our Four Seasons Landscape Committee. Our committee is made of a group of people from many different backgrounds but all with a key similarity. We all love landscaping. If you too love creating a beautiful landscape come join us. We walk every Friday morning throughout various HOA maintained areas and meet on the third Tuesday of each month. ~ Nanette Scott, nscott.sbdfarms@icloud.com Landscape Committee FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2019 25 We hope you've been enjoying our articles over the past few months. We have done a deep dive into why rooms have been given their respective names. There has been some confusion about the name of the Game Room. Until recently, many have called it the Card Room. Our committee has spent countless hours discussing how this name excludes several groups, such as the Domino Group, Scrabble, Rummikub, etc. There were some suggestions for new names that were rejected (Goof-Off Room, Hiding-From- The-Spouse Room, Waiting-For-The Next-Thing-To-Start Room, and finally the Fun & Games Room (which was rejected as some who play do not have fun). We finally settled on the Game Room and sincerely hope everyone will feel included when they enter. There has been a recent unexpected development in the name of what was formerly known as the Arts & Crafts Room. Someone has moved the letter "C" and used super sticky glue to put it in its new position. We cannot move the "C" back and feel it would be a waste of HOA funds to order a new sign. Therefore, the new room will now be known as the CArts & rafts Room. While groups who previously met in that room will still be welcome, the committee felt it important for the room to fulfill the promise of its new name. Homeowners wishing to check out rafts or carts can do so from this room. There will be a check-out sheet and you may keep the raft or cart for two weeks before returning or re- renting. If you would like to be a part of the Room Name Committee, you can join us every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at midnight for our meetings in the Library (formerly the Lots-Of-Books-On-Various-Shelves Room). ~ Thomas Jefferson Airplane Room Name Committee CARTS & RAFTS ROOM
