Birdwatchers
The club will not have an official meeting in December but we
will have a bird walk on Sat., Dec. 14, to Santee Lakes in Santee.
The Santee Lake Recreation Preserve is a 190 acre park with seven
beautiful lakes. It is a 45 minute drive southeast of Ocean Hills. Sport
fishing is popular as the lakes are stocked year round. Amenities
include camping, fishing, boating, and birdwatching. Approximately
230 species either live here full time or pass through to avoid the
cold. It is a perfect place to photograph or just enjoy the birds. This
is a very easy open level walk that anyone can do. As usual we will
meet in the overflow parking lot at 7:45 am to get directions and
organize carpools with an 8 am departure time. Grilled hamburgers
and hot dogs are sold at The Grill at the lakes, or you can bring your
own lunch. Dress in layers as it will be chilly in the morning and
warming as the day progresses. If you have been wondering what
our bird walks are like, please join us on this walk to Santee Lakes. It
is a beautiful serene park that connects you to nature and away from
the hustle and bustle and traffic of the city. If you are not a member,
you are always welcome anyway. Hopefully, we will see you all on Do
Dues Day in January.
On Oct. 22, the club had their annual party in the Mykonos Room.
It was very well attended and a lot of fun! Homemade salads, pizza,
cake, coffee, and cider were enjoyed by all. With the approaching
end of term of our president, Bill Saltzman, we took the opportunity
to wish him well and thank him for his years of hard work. His
photographic skills and knowledge of birds are amazing and much
appreciated by all. Thankfully, he will still be an important member
of our club. Happy birding!
