We are also very excited about the events we are planning for 2020 – informative programs at meetings and exciting trips. Our first trip is on Sat., Jan. 11, 2020, when we will be going to the Lawrence Welk Theater in Escondido to see A Chorus Line, the seventh longest-running Broadway show ever. This trip includes a pre-show three course lunch, ticket for the show, the bus and all gratuities. We have reserved 30 tickets, so please sign up early. The price is $145 for members. Seating will be based upon receipt of your check. We are also very pleased to announce another trip to see the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. We have reserved 24 tickets for the outdoor evening show on Tues., Aug. 4. Please sign up early as we may be able to purchase additional tickets if needed. This trip includes a ticket for the show, a snack, the bus and all gratuities. The price is $135 for members. Additional details about each trip can be found on the flyers at the Clubhouse. To sign up for a trip, please leave a check made out to the OH Travel Club in the Travel Club Envelope at the front desk of the Clubhouse at any time. If you are not a Travel Club member, please add a guest fee of $5 to the price listed. To check on your status, please ask for the Travel Club Folder at the front desk of the Clubhouse to see the Trip Confirmation Sheets, which are also available at our Travel Club meetings. We do not cash checks until after the "No Refund" date. We hope to see you at our meetings and on one or more of our trips in 2020! Travel Club The Billiards Club hosted our semi-annual Members Meeting & Lunch on Oct. 24. The current slate of officers was approved for 2020: President, Charlie Payne; Vice President/Tournaments, Cal Roe; Vice President/Training, David Key; Treasurer Kathy Thornton; Secretary, Janice Pelcher. The Members Meeting was followed by the 8-Ball Club Championship. The first round was set up so that all "A" players played a "B" player chosen at random. The "B" players immediately removed three balls! "B" players may feel intimidated when they must face "A" players, but this was soon turned around when the "A" player had to watch as three of the "B" player's balls were taken off the table. This handicap made the matches quite even. Each match was two out of three and many matches required all three games to determine who would advance. Moreover, a number of games were determined after only the 8-ball remained on the table. Several games were decided by the dreaded "scratch after sinking the 8-ball" giving the win to the player with balls still on the table. But that is 8-ball. The tournament winner was "A" player Gary Pelcher who defeated Ralph Hundley, Cal Roe, Alan Belisle and Bob Sandler. The win was worth $40. Second place was Dick Salo, a "B" player, who defeated Don Farmer, Ralph DiTursi, and Charlie Payne, and took home $20. "B" player Ralph Hundley got third and $10, with "A" player Don Farmer in fourth getting $5. An additional feature of the tournament was prizes for sinking three or more balls in a row. Three balls (not that hard) was worth $1, with additional balls worth another $2, $3, $4, $5, or $6 for sinking 8 in a row – or running the table. That's a total of $21 which was won by only one player, John Mitchell, who broke and ran the table! He did win the $21, but it did him no good in the tournament as he lost his other two games. Overall, players won a total of $160. Not bad for a tournament with no entry fee. On Oct. 3 we had a Skills Contest. Players rotated around six tables, each offering different billiards challenges with cash rewards. It was possible, if unlikely, to win from $6 to $20 at each table. In total our players won $126, again with zero entry fee. Big winner was Keith Bogost with $14. Tied for second were Charlie Payne and Dan Wilkerson at $13. On another Billiards Club news front, we had reports that there was unauthorized intermingling of pool cue butts and shafts in our overnight storage locker. This had to stop! Crack engineers Gary Webb and Cal Roe accepted the challenge and collaborated to design special boards for the top and bottom of the locker, as shown in this photo from the OHCC wood shop. This novel construction allowed them to insert foolproof restraining walls between wandering butts and shafts, ensuring a good night's rest for all. Well done, gentlemen. Billiards
