| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2019 | 35 Founders Duplicate Bridge Friday Duplicate Bridge Do you ever wonder why sometimes we play the Howell movement and other times the Mitchell movement? It depends on the number of tables in play. With three or four tables we use Howell. With five or more tables we use Mitchell. The Mitchell movement is very simple with an uneven number of tables, players move up, boards move down. Half tables require a sit out. An even number of tables requires either a skip or a relay. The differences between a Standard Mitchell and Relay Mitchell Movement are explained by Benno and Gisela Rayhrer. The Relay Mitchell movement is a modified Standard Mitchell movement and eliminates the skip. Every pair plays all rounds, all boards and all opponents which guaranties completely fair scores. In the Standard Mitchell every pair plays a different set of boards as well as against a different set of opponents caused by the skip. Therefore the scoring is not as fair as in Relay Mitchell." If you are a current intermediate duplicate player, a rubber bridge player who wants to learn the duplicate game, or a former bridge player (college maybe?) or taking bridge classes here at OHCC, then come join us. We are a friendly bunch. We play every Tuesday at 6:30 pm (Check in at 6:15 pm) at Abravanel Hall or the Mykonos Room. Player donation of $2 is requested. Please bring correct amount. Annual dues are $6. For partnership arrangements please contact Phyllis Skall, (858) 405-2684 or email pskall@yahoo.com. Please join us! We offer a Duplicate Bridge game that combines the superior scoring of Duplicate Bridge but also has the friendlier and non- aggressive attitude of home style Rubber Bridge. With Duplicate Bridge, your true opponents are the pairs that hold the same cards as you would rather than your opponents at the table. We are not an ACBL game and for that, we not only offer an extremely reasonable game price of just $2, but also give cash awards to the winners. If you are interested, please call John Gates at (760) 295-5885, the president of this bridge club, to see if this type of game might meet your expectations. We are relatively small and have anywhere from five to eight tables. The games are at 1 pm on the second, fourth, and fifth Fridays of the month in Mykonos. You do not have to join this club to play your first game, however if you decide to join the annual dues are $6.
