34 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2020 Computer & Technology Class "Today" security is of primary importance in all fields, including technology. Hewie Poplock, of the Central Florida Computer Society and The Sarasota Technology Users Group, is a star witness when it comes to security in the field of technology because Hewie himself was a victim of identity theft. Inspired by his personal experience, Hewie gave our January class an informative session with suggestions on how to avoid becoming a victim. He discussed how cases of identity cloning are used to attack payment systems, including medical insurance. He also demonstrated how emails are sent, where the senders pose as legitimate companies or government agencies. In the session, Howie included videos of actual occurrences and events; he showed articles that pertain to how identity theft can happen; and finally, he explained what to do and who to contact if you or someone you know should become a victim of ID theft. All of us left the session feeling much wiser. Our class meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:30 am in the RCN. We encourage you to visit and explore technology with us. Contact Larry Workman at larry.workman@gmail.com if there is a certain subject you would like to have covered in one of our classes. ~ Larry Workman We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am in the RCN room #3. Newcomers are always welcome, even if you haven't read the book. The Book Club selection for February is The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. Here is a brief description of the book from Amazon. com: "1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister. 1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies," who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose. Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth… no matter where it leads." Please join us when we discuss this book on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 am. Louise Lyon will be leading the discussion. For those of you who like to read ahead, our book for March is scheduled to be From the Corner of the Oval by Beck Dorey-Stein.
