| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2020 | 13 Garden Club All OHCC residents are welcome to attend the OHCC Garden Club general meetings held on the second Wednesday of each month in Abravanel Hall beginning at 9:30 am for refreshments and mingling. Stop at the Greeters' table for a nametag and to pick up a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the beautiful plants that we give away each month. If you want to sign up for membership or for volunteering, stop at our Hospitality table. Also, check out the sharing table outside the double doors by the stage. You may find that perfect plant to fill a spot in your garden. Our next General Meeting is Wed., Feb. 12. February's speaker will be Judy Macomber, with Pet Lover Publications. Judy is a Master Gardener and will be discussing Edible and Pet Friendly Landscaping. She will share tips on what edible plants can be incorporated into our gardens for people and their pets. We all love our pets and we want to ensure that they have fun, functional, and safe places to run and play. In warmer climates like we have here in San Diego, pet owners have the added challenge of providing shade, shelter, and water. Our furry friends need space, but we humans still want to enjoy attractive landscapes and clean, orderly environments. And, if some of it is edible, all the better. So come and hear what Judy has to say and invite your pet-loving friends. Remember – due to the Clubhouse renovation, we will be unable to enter through the front doors. The access to Abravanel Hall will be through the double doors by the stage that is next to our outdoor plant sharing table. We will be planning fun and informative outside events in 2020 so keep listening at the general meeting and watching for your bulletins so you don't miss out on your Garden Club's upcoming activities. Yiddish Club Reliable sources say we set an all time record on Sun., Dec. 22, 2019! There were 141 members and friends attended our semi- annual Yiddish Club luncheon. Our new Board was then installed by Carol Hirsch. All were looking forward to their new responsibilities. The crowd enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Katella Deli from Orange County. The highlight of the afternoon was the entertainment by Shalom Sherman (yes, that's his real name). Shalom bills himself as the Jewish cowboy from Encinitas. He claims to do private parties and parties with no privacy. He also specializes in engagement parties and disengagements, weddings, divorces, house warmings and houses without warmth! He moved among the dining tables with his accordion, interacting with the guests. This interaction between Shalom and the Yiddish Club members and guests produced bursts of laughter from everyone. Our first program for the new year on Feb. 17, will be a documentary describing a Jewish baseball team entitled Heading Home: The Story of Team Israel. It's the David and Goliath story of Israel's National Baseball Team as it competes for the first time in the World Baseball Classic. Truly heartwarming and inspiring. A must see! So, come join us as a member for only $10 per year, and treat yourself to great camaraderie, great programs, and great desserts! Good health and happiness to all. ~ Elaine Massei and Batia Cagan, Co-Presidents L-R: Co-Presidents Elaine Massei and Batia Cagan,Co-Vice Presidents Itamar Cagan and Debbie Garey, and Secretary Joann Bush. The unforgettable Shalom Sherman
