12 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2020 | Birdwatchers Thanks to all who made Do Dues Day a big success for our club! We are excited to have 20 new members join us. Welcome to them and to our continuing members. It should be a great year with new and interesting walks, and informative, entertaining meetings. Our meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every other month starting in January so there will be no meeting in February. Our next scheduled bird walk will be on Thurs., Feb. 13, at Lake Wohlford in Escondido. We will be leaving later than usual because of the winter temperatures. Meet at 8:15 am in the overflow parking lot for an 8:30 am departure. Dress in layers and wear a hat and good walking shoes. Bring walking sticks and binoculars if you have them. If you need binoculars, we have extras. Lake Wohlford is about a 40 minute drive from Ocean Hills. A portable toilet is available there. If you carpool, remember to reimburse your driver. Lunch, if you choose to go, will be at Smokey's Lake Wohlford Cafe, home of the famous all-you-can-eat catfish dinner. Lake Wohlford was Escondido's first reservoir. It is a very popular fishing spot where you can catch rainbow trout, big largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. We are sure to see a lot of waterfowl such as mallards, great blue herons, Western grebes, and egrets as well as the year-round bald eagle that makes his home at Lake Wohlford. The trail runs a little above the lake and allows for easy viewing into the trees as well as lovely water views. Attached are a few photos taken by our resident birders/ photographers, Joan Comito, Bill Saltzman, and Ann Baldwin of the Dec. 14, walk to Santee Lakes, a fabulous birding spot. Enjoy!
