36 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2020 | Ace of the year for the 9ers is none other than Lyle Conifrey. Seen at right, smiling. Congratulations. Lyle also plays on Tuesday with the team of Dergan, Sanelli, Wilson, and Conifrey. Her handicap is a respectable 15 for 18 holes and eight for the 9ers. She has been playing for about a decade and has six holes in one. If you don't know about the 9ers, they play once a week and play the first 9. So, for those of you who cannot get in the whole course, the 9ers is a great option. While I was in Tasmania, [Tassie to the locals], Australia a few weeks ago, I had an amazing golf happenstance. In one of our drives we found the Farm golf course. Which was in the tiny town of Bothwell and was the first one built in Australia. It came about when the British penal colony, in Tassie, needed farmers to grow veggies for themselves and the prisoners. So, they shipped over a few farmers from Scotland. And, you probably know that if there are Scots around, before long there would be a golf course. And there was one in just three years. In addition to that first, the Scots also built the first distillery… or did you already guess that? There are some interesting things about golf courses in Australia. To start, there are many courses with more than nine holes but less than 18. When asked about this, I was told that some courses built a long time ago, just took up as much land as they had and when they ran out of land, they ran out of holes. There are even some with less than nine holes. But even more interesting is a rule on many courses that you have your choice of taking the lie or hitting again if you happen to hit a kangaroo. And, if a bird picks up your ball, your partner and you agree on the lie where the bird picked it up… and lastly that if you hit a sheep, you are allowed to set your ball on dried sheep poop, acting as a tee, on the fairway. That is what we call GOLF in Australia. Try it someday. Oh yeah, if you play on a course that has the first word "Royal" in its name, you had better have real golf shoes… others not allowed. About the only stuffy thing in Australia. I would like to have listed all the holes in one since the last publication, but alas, the weather and other golfer excuses have left us with none. The ladies (Allison Vincent, Chair) of golf put on their annual holiday luncheon and had a great time. The fabulous hat contest was of particular interest as shown at right with the winners Kathy Hunt and Barbara Miller. And some truly amazing homemade hats. To see all of them, just ask wonderful Patti Smith for a copy of her pics. If you have not already paid your dues, please do it now. We want all men's days' golfers and women's day golfers to be paid in order to play. Thanks and have a happy, healthy, and invigorating 2020. You can reach me at bbopalua@yahoo. com, Hal Stephens. Golf Club Swim & Wellness At our November Board meeting, we voted to incorporate surfing into our swim and wellness club name and to continue to communicate with our members about growing surfing opportunities via our website and by emails with weather planning help from lap swimmer/surfer Tim Pentel. For our Feb. 20 Happy Hour Party and meeting at 7 pm, we are delighted to have Kory Ward, PHD discuss exercise physiology, prevention of metabolic syndrome, diabetes and information to help strengthen our muscles. Lynne Condé will dovetail this presentation with information and food samples on nutrition to enhance muscle strength, along with applications to pool workouts by Aquafit instructor Leesa Singer. We will be using our new panel format recommended by lap swimmer Dr. Nakeff, our VP, to answer any questions our members may have on any topics related to wellness, swimming, and surfing. Happy hour appetizers, cocktails and free prizes with raffles will also be offered. See you at the pool —rain or shine!
