By Al Vallecorsa, PGA Director of Golf TIP FROM THE PRO - THREE KEYS TO GREENSIDE BUNKER PLAY / HYBRID OPTIONS Have you ever noticed that most tour players would rather be in a greenside bunker than in long nasty rough? However, most amateur golfers would prefer to hit out of rough than be in a greenside bunker. Why is that? I think that tour players understand the key factors of greenside bunker play and have the confidence to successfully execute this shot. Here are my three keys to make greenside bunker shots easier for you: 1. Never hear the click of the ball when it contacts the club face. To control greenside bunker shots you never really want to make contact with the ball. Focus on the club head entering the sand two inches behind the ball. 2. During a bunker shot, make sure you take a full swing. Understand that when you are in a greenside bunker, you want to try to move a large amount of sand; this is what is going to get the ball out of the bunker. You always want to commit to taking a full swing. As long as you don't hear the contact between the ball and the club face, usually the ball will come out nice and easy on the green. 3. Understand that the club is your friend. An open face will help the club glide through the sand while a square/closed club face will dig. Depending on the course conditions, make sure that you open or close the face correctly. For example, when there is very little sand or wet sand, an open face would likely glide the club head over the sand, causing you to hit the ball first. Try using a square club face to help you dig into the sand, resulting in the sand moving the ball. Try these three simple tips, and I am sure you will have more success getting the ball out of greenside bunkers. How do you know which hybrid to buy? Check out this conversion guide that I put together. 18 degree = 2 iron 21 degree = 3 iron 25 degree = 4 iron 30 degree = 5 to 6 iron 35 degree = 7 to 8 iron Hybrids, when compared to long irons 1.) Send the ball flying high - studies have shown a hybrid can often get you eight more yards than a typical iron; 2.) The club design is superior - with the hybrid club design, the center of gravity is moved lower and further back from the club face. The result? You get more trajectory and ball loft; 3.) More forgiving - who DOESN'T need a club that performs well even if the sweet spot isn't hit; 4.) Improved shot possibilities - with a hybrid you have more options out of bad lies, tight spots and trouble situations. Hope this helps! SALE OF THE MONTH!
