"A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort. A library is a good place to go when you feel bewildered or undecided, for there, in a book, you may have your question answered. Books are good company in sad times and happy times…." ~ E.B. White. Library Association APRIL BOOK BUYS AV Committee Over the hill! Not really. Now that you are retired, are you ready again to learn something new? SOMETHING that has some fun built into it? Some of your neighbors have and are thankful they did. Back in 2008 an AV volunteer saw resident, Janice Hart walking through the neighborhood and she knew Janice's husband had recently passed away. She offered condolences and asked Janice if she felt up to helping with an upcoming Theatre Arts Show placing microphones on actors. Janice recalls, "I did not know many people here in OHCC and decided I'd give it a try. This would give me a chance to do something and meet people. I had no previous audio training — my career had been in finance with IBM. AV volunteers trained me and have always helped me along the way. Through my volunteering as an audio tech I've learned how to operate an audio board and I have met a lot of interesting people. It keeps me active and contributing to the community. This also tells me I am never too old to learn something new. We seniors should always be striving to try new experiences and expand our knowledge. Age should not be a concern. Another member of the Audio Team, Steve Malone, said "Back in 2005/06 I was playing music in the Tommy Thompson band and took on the task of setting up our sound equipment. I was working by trial and error. I saw an opportunity to volunteer for our AV Committee with the hopes of learning how to set up the sound equipment. Over 10 years later I'm still not sure what I'm doing but I enjoy volunteering with people who do and learn with every event I work on." There is a need for more residents to help with microphones other equipment in the audio department. Working OHCC entertainment and education events behind the scenes is very exciting. The audio volunteers will teach residents enough to get started, and then it's up to them how involved they want to get.
