| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2020 | 11 Yiddish Club Have you joined our Yiddish Club? You don't have to be Jewish or speak Yiddish. As a member, you can still look forward to our general meetings and our two luncheons. In addition to all of that, for "no extra charge" you get camaraderie, develop new friendships, increase your knowledge, and add laughter to your life! Our next meeting, Mon., April 13 at 7 pm in Abravanel Hall, will feature Mark Silberstein, who previously was the public relations director for the Israeli Embassy. He will bring us up to date about recent political issues taking place in the Middle East. Also, reserve Sun., June 28 at 11:30 am in Abravanel Hall for our biannual luncheon. You can anticipate delicious food and great entertainment!! For your continued curiosity, here are a few more commonly used Yiddish expressions: Mazel Tov - A phrase used to congratulate someone for his or her marriage, college graduation, birth of a child. It literally means "good luck." Mentsh - An honorable, decent person. A person who helps you when you require help. Oy Vey - An exclamation of dismay, grief, or exasperation. Shalom - It means "deep peace." Commonly used when greeting someone or departing from someone. Mishigoss - Means insanity or craziness. The word mishigoss has been incorporated into Jewish humor: "Hirako and his friend Izumata are at the baths in Tokyo and are making small talk. Hirako then says to Izumata; "Izumata-san. I regret to inform you that your wife is dishonoring your bed with a man of the Yiddish persuasion." Izumata thanks his friend for the information and goes home to confront his wife. "I know you are dishonoring our bed with a man of the Yiddish persuasion. How could you do this?" The wife protests her innocence. "That is absolutely not true, Izumata-san. I deny it completely. Who has been telling you such mishigoss?" Remember, laughter is good for the soul! Good health and happiness to all. ~ Elaine Massei, President Ask about our OHCC discount!
