Flowers for Mother's Day 6 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | MAY 2020 By Clare Mendez, Resident Who needs a date on the calendar to celebrate your mother, the mother of your children, or someone you know who has been or still is an excellent mother? Mothers, willingly or not, wiped your butt, snots off your face, and tears from your cheeks and then, taught you how to do all that yourself. That deserves a flower (no hugging this year) or at least a phone call. Roses are so beautiful when they are in your garden, but when you call and order flowers from the florist you run the risk of getting the ones that die within a few days and have very little fragrance. I've taken the time to look up the symbolic meaning of some other flowers you might want to choose from for your Mother's Day bouquet. Calla Lily – Beauty Camellia (white) – You're adorable Carnation – Love Chrysanthemum (red) – I love you Forget me not – True love memories Honeysuckle – Bonds of love Hydrangea – Gratitude for being understood Rosemary – Remembrance Sunflower (dwarf ) – Adoration Sorrel – Affection Yarrow – Everlasting love You don't need to send flowers, but please don't let the day go by without showing your appreciation for them on their special Hallmark Day. When my sons were young, I spent Mother's Day with them going on day trips to various parks so they could run and play and leave me the heck alone. My gosh, the screaming, and fighting, and running. Now, I can finally rest and wait anxiously for them to call me to wish me a Happy Mother's Day even though I might have talked to them the day before. (Do you remember years ago when you wanted to place a call on Mother's Day and had to try over and over again because the telephone lines were all busy and you'd get a recording, "try your call later"?) Anyway, I am happy to announce that my sons now have their own baby butts to wipe. While they are fathers with their own responsibilities, I am still their mother and I hope to get a phone call, flowers or recognition of their love for me on May 10. I, in turn, will wish my daughters-in-law a wonderful, peaceful day as well and truly mean it. Happy Mother's Day!
