Motorcycle Club In March, Bob Howard, Dan Lanphere and Howard Lyon rode to Lone Pine at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada's in Inyo County. Inyo County contains the highest (Mt. Whitney 14,496 ft.) and lowest (Badwater 282 ft. below sea level) points in the contiguous U.S. The air was beautifully clear and Mt Whitney and other mountain tops stood out against the blue sky and white clouds. We met up with three other riders including Bob's brother Bill, who has joined our group on other rides. The next morning, four of us rode to Death Valley National Park, stopping at Panamint Springs, Stovepipe Wells and Ubehebe Crater. The wind at Ubehebe Crater was ferocious at the crater's edge. It literally blew Dan off his feet! Then it was on to Scotty's Castle where we had lunch and took a tour. From there, we went into Nevada to spend night two in Beatty where we were joined by the other two riders. On day three, five of us traveled to Furnace Creek where we attended a video presentation and then on to Badwater for some photos. We continued south and east to exit the park and meet up with Steve Sarchett and Ron Morgan (on his maiden overnight trip with the group!) for lunch in Shoshone. Seven riders continued through some beautiful country, including Red Rock Canyon, ein route to Las Vegas for the night. We treated ourselves to a more extravagant than usual night's stay at the JW Marriott Spa. Ron and Howard enjoyed a glass of wine relaxing at their huge pool and then went swimming under the waterfalls which dropped about 12 feet into the pool and pounded you like a giant jacuzzi. All of this was before meeting up with the whole group at the buffet for a light repast (NOT)… The next morning, we left Las Vegas and stopped at Primm for a final fuel stop. Bill and Marty split off from the Hiking Club Four Seasons folks at Primm and headed home to the Simi Valley area. The remaining five rode down through the Mojave National Preserve where Ron and Steve had their initiation photos taken in the Kelso jail cell. We then had a leisurely ride back through the Mojave Desert, stopping for lunch at Willie Boys, and made it home in midafternoon. Another great trip! Ron did very well on his first "overnighter" and says he is ready for more! ~ Howard Lyon The morning weather forecast for Idyllwild was 53 degrees with a 20 MPH wind. It was time for a change of plans. Since the forecast for going west looked promising, we opted for the Crafton Hills. Off we went to the eastern side and parked on Grape Street in Yucaipa. This hike starts with a climb over a hill through chaparral and then up into the Crafton Hills above a reservoir. The views of Yucaipa and the valleys are spectacular as the aforementioned wind cleared the air. A second reservoir is under construction diverting us to a narrow trail that snaked around the hill to a view of the developing Santa Ana River and an overlook of San Bernardino airport. The temperature rose with us to a pleasant 70 degrees with an accompanying light breeze. It turned into a truly gorgeous day for a hike. The crew finished off the hike with a very good lunch at Denney's in Yucaipa. Our planned hikes are: May 8, to Jenks Lake (three miles) and May 22, to San Bernardino Peak (5.6 miles).
