26 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2020 | As we continue to self-distance, our club will obviously not be meeting again until at least August. Never mind, we all have a lot more time to pursue our photography, even if locations are more limited. Recently I have been experimenting with artistic shots of dewdrops early on foggy mornings. Although the light may be dimmer than usual, this makes it easier to get a detailed image. In sunlight, reflections on the dew can blow out and shadows turn out too dark, removing the subtlety. You may even be lucky enough to capture something interesting reflected in the drop itself. Fog creates beautifully diffused light on landscapes and at night can be really mysterious. I was up around 2 am last week (insomnia familiar to many) and through my kitchen window saw ghostly palm trees shrouded in mist. Of course, I couldn't resist a shot (high ISO, so the shutter speed was around 1/40 second, firmly handheld against the window.) There are many ways to enhance our photography education online. One of my favorite sites is CreativeLive.com. Every day there are courses run by expert teachers in various categories, one of which is Photography. You can sign up for free and, as long as you watch live, it will cost you nothing. I have ended up purchasing several courses on Landscape Photography, Flower Photography, and Wildlife Photography when they are on sale, so that I can watch them any time. I also enjoy their many lessons on post-processing, as I am an avid fan of Photoshop. YouTube is another free source of helpful material, including instruction on specific cameras and phones. I find a presenter I admire, then click to become a Follower, so that I always know when he/she uploads a new video.
