| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2020 | 29 The picture you see to the right doesn't need captions or words, but it is our job to caption it. So, I want you to send in your captions or the golfer's words that you think would be clever or funny. My words would be: "Don't worry Dave, the misses' cart and clubs are in the garage" or "Ya know, things like that screw up my concentration." OK, your turn. Send them to me and I will publish the ones that are clever and don't contain X-rated words. The words for the day are BERNOULLI'S PRINCIPLE. What the heck is that? Before you go to Google read on. OK, you are out there, your ball is set on the tee. You ready your body and mind, grip just right, stance excellent, impeccable swing, and Whoose! The ball takes off sailing beautifully, arcing directly toward the hole on the green. Your picture perfect swing puts backspin on the ball. The dimples on your ball trap a layer of air that is dragged across the top of the spinning ball and as the air comes around the bottom of the ball, it is moving in the opposite direction from the air on the top, and therefore against the onrushing air. So it is slower than the air on the top of the ball. Bernoulli's Principle is that a slow moving air stream has a higher pressure than a fast moving air stream. So, the higher pressure on the bottom is going hold the ball up longer. Are you getting bored? Stay with me. The principle is basically that the dimple effect is so significant that a drive of, let's say, 200 yards (about your 5 iron here at OHCC) would only go about 100 yards if your ball was without dimples. Incidentally, with topspin, the reverse of backspin, the principle is the sameā¦ disaster as your ball has high pressure on the top of the ball and after a short flight it will nosedive. And you will then start thinking of excuses, as your partners start to roll their eyes. Wish I had some really good news, but the way things look right now, golf courses will be open but with lots of Corona rules. We do want you to stay safe out there.
