SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | AUGUST 2020 11 By Dick Roppé, Resident When Jack climbed the beanstalk, did he have a fear of heights (Acrophobia), or was he afraid of the Giant? (Megalophobia). It's not my intent to make light of phobias. They are quite unnerving, unsettling and real for those who have them. Many seek help in the form of therapies or medications. Most of us are probably familiar with a few more, such as Arachnophobia - Fear of spiders, or Agoraphobia – Fear of having a panic attack in public. There is even one phobia that is the fear of everything, called Panphobia. Checking online, I did find one list of over 100 phobias. Here are four of the more interesting and unusual ones. There's no judgment here, I didn't make these up… Arachibutyrophobia - Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth (jelly might help) Sesquipedalophobia - Fear of long words (not good for a writer) Arithmophobia - Fear of numbers (not good for a math teacher) Nomophobia - Fear of not having a mobile phone (one ringy, dingy) With all this in mind, I spent a little time thinking about what's been going on here at Solera and I came up with some phobias that might have developed over the past several months. And yes, I did make these up! Scratchophobia - Fear by a billiards player of calling the eight ball pocket and watching the cue ball follow the eight ball into the same pocket Patchaquiltophobia - Fear by a Solera Quilter that they will lose the key patch needed to finish a complicated quilt Bonsaiophobia – Fear by a Garden Club member, that overnight, their favorite bonsai tree grows to a height of five feet Boccerollophobia – Fear by a bocce player of trying to waste a roll and win the game only to knock the winning ball out and giving the opponents the victory Carolingcartophobia - Fear by golf cart drivers that their batteries will collectively die during the last verse of Frosty the Snowman Encyclofunkophobia - A fear by the Library Club that a 1934, 25 volume edition of Funk and Wagnall's Encyclopedia will be anonymously dropped off on the library cart Unlockalodgeophobia – Fear by the management staff that the Lodge was given the OK to reopen and nobody cared My hope is that you really enjoyed this article. I don't want to have to deal with RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria). The fear of rejection! FEE-FI-FO-FUM PHOBIA!
