38 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2020 | Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. Genealogical Society The food history of America goes back to the days when cooking was done on an open hearth. Many of the recipes had a hearty, satisfying quality that survived the test of time. The early cooks drew the best from America's great bounty and gave us a rich food heritage. When people migrated to America, they brought their culture and their favorite recipes with them. Some were written, some were not, but the recipes were reassuring memories from home. History books tell us how our ancestors cleared land, built cities, fought battles, but extraordinarily little is documented on what our families ate. Our families may have left us a few favorite handwritten recipes tucked away in a book. Or they may have left a favorite cookbook from their collections for us to discover and cherish. We may have been lucky enough to receive family cookbooks that were filled with recipes from "the old country." But if your family did not leave recipes for you, consider starting a tradition of passing your food heritage on to future generations as part of your genealogy documentation. In addition to documenting favorite recipes, consider descriptions of how you celebrated your favorite holidays. Include all your families favorite holiday dishes, what planning you always did and a list of the family members who attended your celebrations. Future generations will be grateful for the history you left behind. The club will not be meeting until January 2021 due to the COVID-19 quarantine. If you are a member you will be receiving emails that cover genealogy information and search tips for the rest of the year in your email. The Sun Lakes Genealogy Society normally meets the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room at 1 pm. Our goal is to provide professional speakers and programs that will benefit our members in their efforts to find their ancestors in the archives of history. You are the beginning twig of your vast family tree. Starting with you and working backward we will help you develop that tree. Our yearly dues are $20 per family. Your first visit is free. Stay safe and well. For more info., call Karen Tarvin, President, at (909) 732- 6448.
