34 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2020 | Halloween is the most frightening, scary, spooky, creepy, ghastly, ghoulish, grisly, WONDERFUL time of the year. Happy Halloween from the Garden Club! Halloween hasn't ghosted us yet. It's still on the calendar, Halloween candy is hitting the shelves and Spirit Halloween is opening stores. Will there be trick-or- treating, costumes, parties? Will people even feel comfortable being "scary" during COVID-19? Only time will tell, but in the meantime here are some fun things we can do in the community: Decorate your yard and inside of your house; you will be amazed at how happy you feel. Perhaps we can have some yard decorating contests or drive by Trick or treating, decorate our golf carts with ghoulish themes and have a parade, a Halloween costume and dance party on Zoom with a pumpkin carving event; the ideas are endless. Meanwhile, back on the garden front, one of the most common questions asked by gardeners is, "When is the best time to plant?" In general, the battle over ideal planting season is usually between spring and fall. Here are some easy plants that grow well in our area. Pansies and Violas, or Johnny Jump up are hardy plants for this month. Asters produce daisy like flowers; while not actually flowers, ornamental cabbages and kale are lovely additions to the flower bed. Chrysanthemums or mums come in a vast array of color and size and really make us feel like its fall. Cosmos are a pretty flower, are drought tolerant but can't take frost. Marigolds come in beautiful fall reds, golds, and yellows. And snapdragons produce an abundance of flowers in bright colors and enjoy cool fall weather and can tolerate a heavy frost. Whatever you choose to plant, just get out there in the fresh air, turn off the TV, shut out the world, and garden. "When the world wearies and society fails to satisfy, there is always the garden." ~ Minnie Aumonier Don't forget to check out the Garden Club sponsored container on the Veranda; ours is right as you enter from the Main Clubhouse. Until we meet again in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom, be safe. For membership call Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101.
