AND THE WINNER IS… Halloween costumes, as we know them, have been seeing a new trend. Party stores and online venues feature costumes that look like Victoria's Secret lingerie with the inclusion of ears on a headband. Some of the numerous characters portrayed that way include sexy devils, smutty vampires, and even sultry clowns! A few years ago, a local fine dining establishment offered a Hollywood-Themed Halloween Event. My husband and I put some time and money into our costumes. He was Clark Gable, and I was Natalie Wood. There were Marilyn Monroes, Al Capones, John Waynes, and other motion picture favorites. It was an ice breaker to chat with the other attendees about their costumes. Some people painstakingly made their elaborate garb. We enjoyed the evening — mingling, dancing, and eating. When the much-anticipated costume contest began, we lined up, taking our turn at the mic announcing our real name and our Hollywood character. Three young girls dressed as naughty schoolgirls (micro-mini plaid skirts and cleavage exposed) added themselves to our line. My Hollywood brow furrowed. Those around us voiced a unanimous complaint, "Look at them, they better not think they're eligible to enter!" All the handsomely dressed folks expressed their ire when the tawdry girls became the winners and collected our prizes. We look forward to seeing elaborate and creative costumes at the seasonal events. They elicit an "I wish I had thought of that," as we vow to be more creative next year. I recall The Three Musketeer guys that looked like the real deal; they were hunky looking even with all those clothes. Crowds continue to embrace the fright factor of morbid creations. We are impressed with a futuristic teched-out robot. And many enjoy a good laugh watching any male sporting a fake bosom and teetering around on heels all night. Recently, our friend Kevin entered a contest dressed as Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation. His decorated mini camper barely fit into the venue's elevator. Cousin Eddie won the grand prize! You can't overlook the time, effort, and ingenuity that these individuals invest. They're preparing for the next year's contest before we even say "Happy New Year." They are the well-deserved winners. Have a great autumn and a Happy Halloween! When groups reconvene, we meet in the RCN Conference Room on the second Tuesday of the month from 1:30 to 3 pm. ~Andrea Zehner, zehnercorked@ gmail.com.
