November is a transition month from hot and warm to cool and maybe wetter. After a very hot summer, we are ready for some cooler weather. Daylight Savings Time (DST), which began in March, ends on the first Sunday in November. The nominal reason for DST has long been to save energy, beginning with Benjamin Franklin (although the evidence is slim). It's a myth that DST was instituted to help farmers. In the fall of 2018, California voted in favor of Proposition 7 that would attempt to repeal the annual clock changes. Next, the state legislature needs to vote on the Proposition, followed by the Congress. Good luck on all that happening in the near future. Veterans Day, on November 11, is a time for us to pay our respects to our military veterans. It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War 1. It was largely considered the end of "the war to end all wars." While our military are often thought of in a war context, most veterans will tell you that they risked their lives to defend our fundamental freedoms, and that they value peace much more highly than war. Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, is important because it's a holiday where we celebrate gratitude, something that we don't do enough of these days. It's usually a time for friends and family to gather together, but this year it may be very different from what we are used to. We all have to determine how to enjoy the holiday and have a safe celebration. Here are a few Thanksgiving quotes: "Let our lives be full of both thanks and giving." ~ unknown "It isn't so much what's on the table that matters, as much as what's on the chairs." ~ W.S. Gilbert "Thanksgiving dinners take 18 hours to prepare. They are consumed in 12 minutes. Halftime takes 12 minutes. This is not a coincidence." ~ Erma Bombeck Thanks to everyone who helped decorate our Lodge. The fall colors add a palette of beauty for all of us to enjoy. Ah, yes, the pandemic is not over, but we have adjusted our life styles and will be ready to get back to normal (whatever that is) when the time is right. The Board will continue to follow County and State guidelines and take a cautious approach to re- opening our facilities and activities. Our goal is to have a safe environment for all our residents. Here are a few appropriate quotes: "To lose patience is to lose the battle." ~ Mahatma Gandhi "Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less." ~ Marie Curie "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." ~ Theodore Roosevelt Stay safe.
