For November, we share with you this beautiful photograph taken
by resident Kathy Thornton on a holiday in Italy, featuring the "Casa
di Ospitalita, Maria Immacolata." The Casa is on the grounds of the
Assisi St. Francis Basilica, which is the mother church of the Roman
Catholic Order of Friars. Assisi is a town in the Umbria region of
central Italy, where Saint Francis was born and died. It is one of the
most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy and has been a
UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000.
The Basilica construction was begun in 1228, built into the side of
a hill, with the upper section built in an early example of the Gothic
style in Italy, and the lower section (containing a crypt of the remains
of saints), built in the Romanesque style. Both sections include
frescoes by many medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan
schools of art, giving the Basilica an outstanding collection of Italian
art of those periods.
In 1986 and 2002, Pope John Paul II gathered in the church of Assisi
with more than 120 representatives of different religions for a World
Day of Prayer for Peace. On West Vista Way in Vista is the local Church
of St. Francis of Assisi.
Enjoy the photo of the Casa de Ospitalita, for its beautiful display
of potted plants, and the significance of the Basilica in art history and
prayer. We are thankful for what we do have this year, although we
know it will be different than most years. We send you our best wishes
for your own Thanksgiving 2020. ~ Judy Harris and Lainy Vinikow
