32 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2020 | Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. Racquet Club Despite many players packing up and hitting the road with the RV Club in September, our OHCC courts continued to be very active. A typical weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) on our five dedicated pickleball courts and two shared pickle/paddle courts reflect nearly 100 court reservations by 150 to 170 different players. Over the course of a typical seven-day week, we've seen about 215 reservations with more than 200 players. For tennis, a typical weekend across our three courts has about 10 court reservations with about 20 different players. That increases during an average week to about 20 court reservations with 25 to 30 players. The already vibrant court community continues to be energized with newcomers to OHCC. It's fun to meet new faces from various places – check out the list of "Available Players" looking for matches on the Racquet Club website. And now, meet some of our more recent members: Jan and Tom Vaccaro traded places when they downsized from Leucadia. According to Jan, while they knew nothing about pickleball before arriving they've found it to be an enjoyable way to get exercise while still being able to socialize a little, which is saying a lot during COVID! Julie and John Pashkowsky moved to OHCC from San Diego in early August. The couple played tennis and racquet ball, and late last year Julie started playing pickleball. With the help of Ann, Dave, Herb and her new pickleball friends she picked it up again here at OHCC. "Everyone here has been so welcoming. I have met some great friends and improved my game," said Julie. From the east coast to the west coast came Donna and Rob Ryan, arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina though they lived many years in New Jersey as well. While they didn't pack along much racquet experience with them, they proclaim an absolute love for this beautiful resort and pickleball. "We very much appreciate the efforts of the Racquet Club with the lessons and match-making setups. We have met many new friends because of this and are extremely grateful," said Donna. Sara Stewart and Wayne Disch unpacked in mid-March, just two days before the shut-down, and proudly unfurled their Green Bay Packers flag outside their new home on game days. Following their San Diego-based children was a prime driver for the relocation, plus selling the snowblower and escaping Wisconsin's frozen tundra. Neither had played pickleball before but always wanted to, so they jumped at the opportunity to learn with the Livseys and Mike Hoggatt. "The pickle ball sessions have been wonderful. Herb, Gerry, Sara, and Mike do such a super job teaching. We have enjoyed getting to know other people on the courts." Welcome to our newbies! Stay tuned, next month we'll introduce some more.
