yiddish culture club "Memories, memories, dreams of yesteryear," or in this case, dreams of many many many yesteryears. What brings this on? Well, the thought of our yearly ice cream social in June for one reason. Do you remember finding an old golf or tennis ball and bouncing it to see how many times you could put your leg over it before you missed? Or the ditties we sang as we jumped in and out of a rope swung by two friends? How about playing stickball in the alley, street, or playground? A chalk drawn hopscotch on the sidewalk and your favorite lagger in your pocket was almost as important as remembering your homework when you went to school. And thinking of school brings on memories of the school custodian (in those days we called him the janitor) flooding the playground in the winter so we could ice skate. In the summer when school was out the boys and men played softball on the playground. How about the "Good Humor Man" riding his three wheeled ice cream bike? I remember the hot nights of summer (before home air conditioning) when people went to the park and the parents played cards while the kids just played; fireworks, sparklers, and those things you'd light with a match so they would turn into snakes. So these are some of my memories from childhood in Chicago when I hear "Ice Cream Social!" Was it much different in other large cities or even small towns? Think about it for you never know when the subject may come up as you are eating your "no sugar added" ice cream liberally drenched in chocolate, strawberry, or marshmallow sauce with nuts or sprinkles on top and drinking decaf coffee to wash down the sweetness of this very delectable ice cream treat. So make sure to join us for this event on Wed., June 12, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. A 50/50 will be held as well. This will be an evening of treats and additional surprises as we "Meet the Press" after we enjoy our ice cream. Guests are always welcome but there will be a charge of $3 per non-member. There is no charge for members. It is that time of year to renew your membership. Please pick up an application from the YCC slot on the activities wall in the Main Clubhouse lobby. Membership dues are still $15 pp and the membership form should be sent with the check to our Membership Vice President, Debbie Lewin at 1621 Woodlands Drive. For any other info., contact Diane, 769-0130. We hope to see you all so we have a great crowd for our first summer event of the year. social clubs & groups | sun lakes lifestyles | june 2013 |23
