As February begins, we are still in kind of a hangover. We know it will get better, but we remain impatient. We want to be able to sing, dance, laugh together, enjoy life, and move about unhindered by the virus. We want to be safe. In the meantime, let's focus on February. It's the shortest month (getting us closer to spring?). There are numerous special days, starting with Groundhog Day on the 2nd. In the east, the groundhog is said to forecast weather by looking for his shadow and predicting an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Where we live, it seems as if we go from fall to spring and summer, skipping the cold and snow of winter; however, we are blessed to enjoy the view of the winter snow on the mountains near us. Next, we have Valentine's Day, which can be credited to the Romans. Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on February 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day. St. Valentine is the patron Saint of lovers. It's ironic that we have gone from executions to giving flowers to a loved one. Hopefully, this means we have become more civilized. Presidents' Day, celebrated on the third Monday of February, honors the life and achievements of George Washington. The day is, in practice, often used to honor and remember all past U.S. Presidents, and in particular, Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson. Here are a few interesting facts about George Washington: He only had a grade school education. Before fighting the British, he fought for the British. It is estimated that he wrote between 18,000 and 20,000 letters. With the days getting longer, this is a good time to enjoy what is available to us as we await our opportunity to receive the vaccine, such as reading a good book, doing spring cleaning, or trying out a favorite recipe. Sometimes the simplest, everyday actions can enrich our lives, such as a smile and a wave. When some of us walk our community, we sometimes recognize the dog more than the owner. Your Board will continue to adhere to our Vision, Mission, and Values statements, which we adopted two and one-half years ago. They remain our foundation as we work "to preserve and enhance the quality of life and sense of community through effective and efficient management of the Association…" Stay safe.
